Is there some moral issue here or is it a parent's responsibility?

I know I do. I wish I had the internet when I was younger.
Imagine all the evil stuff I would have done, and all the sex I would have had.

No, as long as Its not his only source of Sex Ed. they have. (assuming there over like 13 or something)
You should not have a problem with good parenting

That would work in a fairy tale world. I have great parents and know of great parents, but when all they can get all the goodies on the internet from their own bedroom Good Parents have no chance.

That is why when my kids are old enough the computer will go in the living room and not their bedroom.

Yes, a parent should and I do.

If your child is under 18 and living under your roof you're responsible for them and everything they do.
Exactly.

My kids are only 9 and 8 and don't get access to the internet unless it's specifically for research for a school project or similar.
This conversation came up recently at the gym, one of the mothers there allows her son, who is also 9 to have a computer with internet access in his bedroom, she admitted he spends a lot of time chatting online... I asked who is he chatting to, her response, 'I have no idea', I just don't get what this mother is thinking?!
I imagine eventually I will allow my kids access to the internet (or not) but the computer will be in a central location in the house... damn, I guess then I will also have to sensor myself and what I peruse!

It is ok that you monitor ther internet usage but you need to tell them and explain that you are doing this for love and their safety. They will understand if you are honest.

you have to. there are a lot of sites that you need to keep tabs on your kids interest in. some glamorize suicide, eating disorders, running away. Tess will tell me about these things and she is disturbed by them too. one site a girl had pics up of her arms she had cut herself repeatedly and was trying to pass it off as cat scratches. one boy was talking about his dad beating his cat to death on another site.... there is much out there to enter your childs mind. only a fool would not be interested in exactly what enters and how their child feels and thinks about it . if you pretend it isn't there and limit them to disney you will raise a person completely unprepared to face the real world.

Fortunately my kids are only interested in Nickelodean and neopets.com right now.

my son is seven the other day Tesla came and said mom Tyler typed in "make your own credit card..." she said the funniest part was he got 9 or 10 replies...

she sounds like one of the millions of people who should not be raising children. too many parents use television and the computer as babysitters for their children....

9 yr olds should have their chat ability turned off on their pc or set so only certain people can contact them....

i let tyler play games on my part of the pc sometimes n if i leave the room he types something in search so we have to be careful. i asked him the other day if he could spell penthouse he said "no but i have an idea on playboy..."

Yes you should for there own sake they will thank you one day :)

Noone said kids were stupid. But they do have a habit of getting in trouble.

But hey, that's not a big deal. Right Mycat?

i think kids on the net is a dangerous thing, at least with chat rooms. For some reason today I was thinking how dangerous it is and how easy it would be for some sick fuck to get away with things involving kids. I would definitly moniter my young'n if he/she were in chat rooms.

Then again, I met tit in a chat room when we were 12. We knew each other on and off for years until at 16 I flew to Puerto Rico ON MY OWN to see her for a dance. Lucky for me, the dance did in fact exist and she was not a sick fat hairy dude. Looking back on it I realize what a compromising position I could have been in and that my parents let me do it. But I guess I knew her for years and also spoke on the phone alot, but it's still sounds like an iffy situation.

Now we live together. Who'da thunk it?

but if my kid was like looking at porn or something I would have to sit him down, give him the talk, explain to him that his feelings are normal but that he needs to understand and control them

and then give him access to all the porn in my Favorites/ Bookmark folders

Tesla doesn't like me to snoop but yet again she is very forthcoming. If she thought i would lock her out of certain areas instead of talking to her about things she might not tell me what she encounters. It bothers me when she talks to kids that are suicidal or having sex at a very young age but it pleases me that when she runs in to it it's " mom will you come here? what do i say? how can i help?" or "oh my god this guy is a perv."

I hope I have a relationship with my kid someday. That is very much how I was with my mother

it's romantic but at 16 sorry if i was your mommy i would have gone too or you'd have not gone.

yes but at 16 i was also very independent for my age. I agree that it is very young but she felt that I was mature enough. can't say if that's true or not, but things worked out for the best. She is a very good mother, but she was wrapped up in her own life to worry about what others would think of her for letting me. She knew tit as well also and that I could take care of myself.

and I still didn't even get any that time either

I had chosen to trust my kids, until one of them started to delete the history in IE. I installed some net monitoring software and I'm devistated by what I found. I haven't even told my wife yet.
