I have seen Turkey Vultures doing that to a dead steer out in the desert. They will bore right into the steer through the anus and eat their way back out. Pretty gross.

I do have one question. Why was it necessary to say the hyena found the dead elephant carcass because of its incredible sense of smell? I would imagine a rotting elephant would be pretty hard to miss from a mile away.

scavengers in general have a very advanced sense of smell doesn't matter if they are land or water based.
