Expanding my lungs (opinions)

looks like it is designed for coach potatoes.

You smoke, even weed? That will cut your wind pretty damn fast. Try deep breathing while doing pull overs. You are expanding your rib cage with the pull over, deep breathing will help expand your lungs into the space.
 
save your money and just breath through a straw while doing your workout
 
I asked a doctor about that expand a lung thing. He said it will make your lungs bigger and I cant remember exactly what he said but he said your lungs will have a way of counteracting that. Like theyll fill in with more tissue so they will still have the same amount of actual surface area for the same oxygen absorption. If you want stronger lungs you need to do more intense cardio. Its not your lungs that actually contract and expand its your diaphragm which is a muscle. You can make that stronger with any intense cardio routine. I used to be huge into surfing. And air is pretty damn important when youre held under water for a minute or when you cant stop paddling even though youre insanely out of breath otherwise youre gonna get crushed. So I used to do things to try to increase my lung strength. Id say stairmaster/elliptical on stupid hard settings.
 
It doesn't matter what you do to your lugs in regards to cardio. If I was to measure your blood saturation, meaning how much oxygen is in your blood, it will always be bout 96-99%. Even at maximal exertion, your lungs do their job at saturating your blood w oxygen.

The breathlessness is because your body can't process the oxygen in the muscles.

AICAR (5-amino-1-β-Dffff-ribofuranosyl-imidazole-4-carboxamide) also known as ZMP is an analog of AMP that is capable of stimulating AMP-dependent protein kinase activity (AMPK). AICAR is being clinically used to treat and protect against cardiac ischemic injury. If left untreated, it may lead to a myocardial infarct. Cardiac Ischemia is caused by insufficient blood flow and oxygen to the myocardium[1] The drug was first used in the 1980s as a method to preserve blood flow to the heart during surgery.[2] Currently, the drug has also been shown as a potential treatment for diabetes by increasing the metabolic activity of tissues by changing the physical composition of muscle.[3]



GW501516 was initially discovered during a research collaboration between GSK and Ligand Pharmaceuticals that began in 1992.[9] R & D Focus Drug News reported that GSK began phase I trials of the compound for the treatment of hyperlipidemia in 2000[10] followed by phase I/II in 2002.[11] The discovery of the compound was published in a 2001 issue of PNAS.[12] Oliver et al. reported that they used "combinatorial chemistry and structure-based drug design" to develop it.[13] One of the authors was the son of Leo Sternbach who discovered benzodiazepines in the 1960s.[14] In 2003, Ligand Pharmaceuticals earned a $1 million payment as a result of GSK continuing phase I development.[15]
GW501516 had completed two phase II clinical studies but GSK abandoned further development of the drug in 2007 for reasons which where not disclosed as of 2008.[16]
Ronald M. Evans from the Salk Institute wishes to create the "first-ever performance-enhancing drug that can radically boost physical endurance in humans". In 2004 he had showed that mice genetically engineered to express PPARδ in muscle cells had greater endurance. He called the mice "marathon mice".[17][18] He purchased a sample of GW501516 and gave mice a much higher dose than had been in research by GSK and found that the compound increased the endurance of the mice. The research culminated in a 2007 paper in Cell that was widely reported in the popular press including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.[17]


This was the same stuff lance Armstrong was using even though they said he was using steroids he was actually using a pep and a serum

The wife was taking this and noticed it was a lot easier to breath while doing cardio

No, ignore the previous 2 posts and just keep working on your HIIT.
 
Start doing some light cardio, drink plenty of water and clean up your diet. Stretch out before doing cardio, start light then work your way up. You will be sure to expand your lungs.

Thats one of the main exercises swimmers and Navy SEALS do, another is called Lung Packing which is way more effective, In my opinion. ? When doing any of these exercises though, you want to be sure your exhaling all air completely and inhaling to the maximum...and with the lung packing method you can get more in there then you thought..Basically anything that activates your diaphragm and causes it to expand to the point of no more expansion will give you greater capacity, basically because the diaphragm is amusculotendinous partition at thoracoabdominal junction it is the chief muscleof the respiration.it helps to increase the vertical diameter of the thorax byits contraction during inspiration.it raises the intra abdominal pressure and some other shit...i dont remember.

So in all reality your lungs aren't actually the focus because your lungs are actually like ballons, they can expand greatly and infinitely but it all depends on how much the diaphragm can hold down...or much the diaphragm can pack into your lungs.

Sometimes incorrect breathing patterns can be the culprit, you may be exhaling or inhaling to soon, or not exhaling completely. I personally do something called the
4 and 4, Inhale for 4, exhale completely for 4. If your doing a fast past of running, its a 4 and 6

How about just doing some deep breathing exercises in addition to your HIIT or cardio?
 
You guys are hilarious! He's asking about running. Increasing your lungs tidal volume will not help w this.

Your lungs are NEVER the limiting factor in exercise, unless you have some sort of lung disease.
 
I have really focused my workouts around running the past few months, but I still can't breathe. I feel winded no matter if I run a mile or 5 miles.

I just picked this up Expand-A-Lung | Increase Lung Capacity with our Breathing Trainer, opinions? I have ran with a snorkel before and I feel that it helped so this should be just as good.

are you sticking to an actual training program? because if you are progressively increasing the distance of your runs at the same pace then there is no logical reason why your VO2max shouldn't be increasing.
 
Something that worked for me. Heavy interval training can help a lot with cardiovascular health. Find out where you want your heart rate needs to be while doing work. Get your heart rate there and hold it. When you go over your goal heart rate back off until it drops back and maintain it. eventually your cardio will improve and you will get to where you can do more work and maintain a better heart rate. This will help improve your breathing as well. A plus about doing this is that you dont have to run a lot and burn off your mass. I did resistance jumps and short burst sprints ect..... hope this helps!
 
sounds like your looking at the wrong thing. Lung actions are determined by how hard your heart is trying to push oxygen through your body. get your heart right and you wont have to worry about the lung capacity. It will increase with interval training as i posted above.
 
i had this same problem and was told by a lung specialist and a physio to get to the pool,

what he had me doing was diving along the bottom of half sized olympic pools (25mts dont know feet) calm urself and swim a length, then calm ur breathing and repeat, the reason u start at half sized pools is its very unlikely ull get half way in ur first weeks and u dont want to be walking the rest

i did this 45 mins a day, 6 days a week, for 6 months and i never had a problem for almost a year....

i had DVT complications of 8 pulmonary embolisms and refused to let it stop me, 5 left and 3 right lung.......my lungs recanalised but i was still out of breath, it worked for me and i couldnt check the mailbox then without passing out, withing about 8 weeks i was clearing 2 laps with a single breath without gagging for air at the end, so a full length of an olympic pool......from a once chain smoker with those complications i advise anyone to give it a try..........now im a beast hahahaha jk lol

This is completely irrelevant to the OPs problem. You have lung issues and needed to increase your lungs capacity.

When guys feel like they can't catch their breath while working out, it's not because their lungs are not doing their job, it's their cardiovascular system not being able to keep up.

Unless someone has lung disease of some sort, the lungs are never the limiting factor in exercise, and increasing lung capacity will do NOTHING for cardiovascular exercise. This goes for smokers too. Even if you smoke, if you don't have COPD, smoking will not affect your cardio.

Yes, I am in the fire academy so we have the same schedule/workout program to follow.

Today I coughed up blood after my run. I only ran 2 miles and by the time I was done I couldn't breathe again. Literally felt like someone was standing on my chest. I started to cough uncontrollably and next thing you know blood was coming up.

Edit: Anyone know what kind of doctor I should go see? I dont smoke, no drugs, nothing. Today made me a little nervous.

That's reason to see a doc. Go see your primary doc and he should refer you to pulmonologist.

Sounds like it could be a mild form of exercise induced asthma. Why not give Bronkaid a go?

I'll see what the doc says first. I don't think its exercise induced asthma, since its only been like this for a few months. I have been lifting/running since I was a teen, you think it would just suddenly kick in now?
 
Well either way, a bronchodilator would help. Tightness, heaviness, etc will ease-up once your airways open.

just go to your primary care MD and get a referral, etc. anytime blood is coughed up it's a sure sign of respiratory tract bleeding so they need to determine what the cause of it is.
 
I went to the hospital this morning since I wasn't feeling any better.

I don't remember all the correct medical terms but they did a few things.... Chest xray, CT scan, drew blood, and urinated in a cup. I did have bronchitis a few months back and they said it may not have cleared my body. One of the doc's said I may have Pneumonia, but they are going to check everything and get back to me.
