how ofter do you perform your 1RM?

never.

I never have. Maybe sometime in the near future.. but I was never overly concerned with it.

me neither, but i woke up today thinking fuck me if i never try il never no. so yeah 1rm is very important now to me. shit it aint rocket science if im lifting heavyer weights im getting bigger.

true 1RM has a very steep risk vs reward

i hear what your saying bro but you gotta try or be stuck with the same results, same physique, same old shit, never progressing u not think?

thanks. I don't see the need to 1rm, I would rather do negatives for strength, but, to each his own bro... It's not enough for bragging rights to possibly cause injury, imo

good luck with that

I wont be trying 1rm's for bragging rights that not what im about.

I want to perform 1rm to see progression because i belive thats what its about pregression!

i hear you tho with regards to injurys this is why im asking how often people perform them i know its not sensible to try it often..

To satisfy my urge to have the biggest e-peen on IML, I 1rm every day....

Seriously though, not worth it IMO.

To me it was always more of a pissing match type thing.. I get more satisfaction out of adding 5 or 10lbs to my 10 rep set. You know what i mean?

i think you can track progression without using 1RM. but if you want to do it, do it. sua sponte, bro

Maybe once every three months. I start with warming up with only 5 reps up to my 10rm. Then I do one rep, add 5 lbs, do one rep, add 5 lbs, etc., until I hit my max. If I feel any pain whatsoever at any time, even minor soreness, I stop. I don't rest between reps any longer than it takes to add the weight and get back into position.

I might maybe once a year on something I feel safe doing. I remember not too long after I got started getting serious about working out my 1RM on deadlifts was 315. Now about a year later I'm doing working sets of 315 for 8-10. For the hell of it after the last set of deads a few weeks ago I put 405 on there to test myself and pulled it np. Like most have said, unless you are training for a PL meet or strongman comp its of more benefit to increase strength with good reps than by 1RM test.

first up nice work on that deadlift progression bro.

i will be doing 1rm just to test my self like you said.. like if i dont try and lift 405 i aint never gonna kno if i can lift 405!

im thinking maybe every 3 months is a good guide..

I did 1rm on flat bench with 405lbs for the mental part just wanted to know i could push that shit up but I was nice and warmed up for it, but like every one said its dangerous... be careful bro

Thanks. My back and legs are way stronger than the rest of body. I guess its from always having manual labor jobs where you don't really use much chest/shoulders for lifting. 405 is decent, not a lot to brag about but its over 2x bodyweight so I'm happy with it for the time I've put in.

exactly what he said he took the words right out of my mouth i did it in jail before just to see and a pod of 60 people i was 3rd did 305 once and barley made it and im 5'8 and dudes 6'5 couldn't even come colse it's all about bragging you don't get bigger from it high reps low weight and low reps high weight i switch it up here and there to mix it up a little and it works good for me I tend to workout alone so 1rm is gone for me anyway

I'm probably one of the few who do 1rm frequently, however I'm a PL so its a bit different. Any hows here what I did last week for DL

barx8/135x8//225x3/275x3/315x3/375x3/415x3/475x1/495x1/505x1/515x1/

I usually will work a 5 or 3 rep max, then switch to a 1rm. I make larger jumps until I get to 1rm then take it slow to get more reps in. Working in no more than 10lbs at a time even if I know I can get more.

Totally agree here! It is nice to see what you can do every now and then, especially when you get older. It gives you that boost. Plus if you go for it and fail you have a new goal to work for. Either way you are lifting and packing on muscle so I think it is fine to"TEST" yourself every once and a while. I usually try the big three every 6 months or so just to see where I'm at.

Never

quite often for me actually. Coming from powerlifting I think its different than most of you guys though.
I dont know about the whole getting hurt thing either. If your doing 3RM or 5RM you have just the same chance as getting hurt as a 1RM, that seems a little ridiculous.
Everything for us is based off of a 1rm. I will usually hit one a month anyway. A lot of our bench days are just that too, working singles up to failure.

If any of you follow 531 or the Juggernaut method or any other program based on your 1rm, how could you not try for a 1RM?!

On my heavy cycles I am almost always trying to pull a new max single. Risk isn't worth the reward? If you are a safe and responsible lifter, the risk is the same as doing anything else in the gym, like ct67_72 said. It is clear cut proof of strength progression. Why would you not want to measure that?

Never

Overall I'd say 2 or 3 times a year I push for a 1RM/PR's which are usually at competitions with good spotters the rest of the time I'm prepping for them.

1RM is what this whole weight lifting thing is about (not bodybuilding, but they have their own needs for 1rm, for example to gauge progress).
Your 1RM is a test within yourself, a struggle and something that you will always try to beat. This leads to self-improvement. That last part is another thing this sport is all about, improving on your capabilities, overcoming obstacles, being better today than you were yesterday.

When you go for that new max it is a fight between you and the weight, and it can have the power to hurt you...Overcome it. It is the greatest feeling, knowing that you just beat a record, or your own record, and overcame a weight that you have been struggling with.

As far as bragging rights go, I pretty much say whatever. There is always a bigger fish in the sea, someone who can out lift you. However, if being competitive with your peers, doing contests, etc is additional motivation than good for you. We are by nature competitors...why not embrace that.

I do it around every 3 months. Its good to keep track of ur 1rm. I'll normally do 2 warm up sets then 4 reps of just below my normal working set and then go for my 1rm.

every month i'll try and double just below my 1rm to make sure my max strength isnt dropping. e.g. if i deadlift max of 500lbs then once a month i'll double on 470 then when it comes to the 3 months i'll go for a 510.

This is exactly how i work it... i am not a power lifter but i lift for size and when i reach a plateau i train like the to break barriers and over a few month period my max slowly increases but its really exhausting i will generally workout like this once every 6-8 weeks
