Airline Seat Dilema

Doesn't matter. If you're taking up two seats you should have to pay for two seats. The only exception I can think of on such short notice would be if a person can PROVE a medical condition which causes the obese condition. Even then I think the person should have to pay extra, but not the full two seat price.
Charge them !
Tough call on whether or not to charge them, but I voted yes due to the following answer from albob, I pretty much agree completely.

Whenever I board the plane I always watch down the aisle for the big one and sit there and say: Please No, Please No, Please NO. Nothing is worse than being in those small seats and some obese person is leaking into your seat. I know that sounds cruel but they really ought to get two seat so it would be more comfortable for us and them.

Moch, as a courtesy to the next passenger that has to sit in that seat you may want to ask that the obese person use the lavatory instead.

Sounds cruel maybe, but I agree. I can understand that some people's depression just makes it worse, because they just keep on eating, but it doesn't make it ok.

I've been thinking about this for a while and have come up with a question of my own. So far we've all assumed the person was "obese". (Safe assumption since that was part of the original question.) Would we all feel the same way if the person was a 300 pound body builder??? 
The airlines get money per seat, just as a restaurant gets money for meals. If an incredibly overweight person went into a restaurant and said they should get two meals for the price of one because they are overweight they would not get it. Why should they get two seats for the price of one, or anything else for the price of one just because they are overweight. That is rediculous.

Interesting! I think though sure, if they were really that huge, but thats probably the guys that are 400 in the offseason, or Anthony Clark who just about needs to be wheeled in on a flatbed...

Hell no !! I 300 lb bber doesn't have a 4 foot wide butt !! He'd still be able to sit in the seat. But I'd feel sorry for anyone sitting next to him. He'd need some serious elbow room

I voted no, my thought is every plane should have 4 or 8 (large seats) on board. There aren't that many truly obese people around that there would be more than 8 on any given flight. Anyway, planes aren't set up like that and airlines don't have the money now to make the changes. That's why I didn't comment.

They could try to charge per pound, but like with the police forces formerly saying you had to be a certain height, some people said it was racial, since certain peoples are often short.
I say charge the bastards. If the airline companies charge a 25month old child ( they DO I know ) then they damned well better charge someone thats taking up a lot more room .
I voted no because I learned that on Southwest (the company who made a big deal out of this) the arm rests do not go up PLUS they still keep the plane full. They bump neither a skinny person nor the obese person. So the airline pockets the cost of the extra airfare and everyone is still uncomfortable.
Only the airline is benefitting, it is not like they are giving a rebate to the person stuck in the seat next to the large person.

I like the idea of the larger seats in theory, but can you imagine the fuss the other passengers would make? Airplane seats are so cramped as it is, people would complain because *they* want more room, and they won't care what the rationale is for giving larger people the bigger seats.
If Southwest wants to charge people for two seats, but there's no way that person can physically have 2 seats because the armrests don't go up, then they're full of shit. That's just ridiculous.
And I think the big bulky guys should pay double too! Like the hockey player example, these guys take up just as much extra room in a different way, with their legs splayed out and elbows gouging the next persons' sides......
As for charging twice in general, well.......in theory I'd say yes, that's fair.....but then the compassionate side of me says, is it really that big a deal? Especially on the shorter flights? Maybe it should be done just for flights that are 2 hours or more. Yes, I recognize that people have paid good money for their seats and deserve to be comfortable........but how often does it happen anyway that you're sitting next to someone that large?
In my previous life as a consultant, I flew a LOT - 2 flights a week, each week, for a couple of years, sometimes more....all that time I only sat next to a person once who was so fat that he was spilling over into my seat. He was clearly miserable, had to keep his hands clasped in front of him the whole time to try to minimize the space he was taking up....yes, I was squished the whole time, but he seemed a hell of a lot more miserable than I was. I could deal with the discomfort for a couple of hours...he has to deal with shit every day.
Okay, long boring ramble over now.......

And also I don`t think it matters if the plane is full or not....they charge you for excess baggage weather it is full or empty 
I agree with GG who mentioned that perhaps the rule can be enforced on flights that are of a certain duration. We'll see what happens...I can't see this really going on, it seems that the ADA or someone like that would seriously object.

Two things.
I've flown Southwest many times, and most of the arm rests do go up.
As for large athletes taking up too much room, I've heard (not confirmed, though) that sports teams buy 3 seats for every two players. That way they can sit 2 to a row, put the arms rests up,
and have plenty of room.
