As for large athletes taking up too much room, I've heard (not confirmed, though) that sports teams buy 3 seats for every two players. That way they can sit 2 to a row, put the arms rests up,
and have plenty of room.

Smart move. But I would like to state for the record that a big hunky hockey player can sit next to me any time and put his hands and elbows wherever the hell he wants. :D Yum.

Annoying businessmen with their masses of papers and loud computers (yes, some people don't understand the concept of muting) should be seated on the wings. :thumb:

I'd have to say charge them.

As many others have said, I've had to sit next to Mr or Mrs Bigass a few times on flights, and it ain't fun. Bad enough when they spill into your seat, OR insist on keeping the window seat (Hey, you got a big ass, and you keep getting up FORCING me to get up, why don't you take the aisle seat so I can sleep a bit), but the talkers are the worst.

I was sitting next to Mr Bigass on a flight to Germany a few years ago, and this bastard was complaining about how restaurants short him on food, never giving him enough. (ON and on and on - like I gave a rats rear end).

When the inflight meal came, I thought I would never hear the end of his bitching (I was trying to pretend to be alseep after a while, but did he shut up? NO). I finally told him that he could probably miss a few meals here and there and could he shut up so I could sleep. (Rude, I know). I guess his feelings got hurt and he finally shut the hell up.

Maybe I should buy two seats to keep the spill over from bothering me? Already started taking ear plugs with me.

I voted yes to charging them.

I agree that anybody who needs 2 seats should pay for 2 seats (whether obese, big bb or superstar). The media is making a big deal like SouthWest airlines invented this idea...so many other airlines do it already.

The problem with society nowadays is that we are so conditioned to step up and say people should be as big and beautiful as they want (well maybe not here on IM ;) :p ) without real contemplation and consideration to the health risks associated with these people. Every day on the news there is studies about how overweight adults and childrens are and about our unhealthy habits but the media wants to make the airlines look like the bad guys? please  no airline made anyone fat before!

Screw it, if it takes certain places getting a little hard on people for a segment of the population to get themselves to the gym and to eat and think healthier, then I am all for it. We have to stop all the excuses and get back into embracing the basics of health. Besides I am sure that there has to be a limit on the excess weight on the plane for safety reasons.

That is a tough one but I had to say, "no" because in my many flights last 2 months, I encountered 4 heavy individuals and felt bad for them and actually let them have my seat (by trading with them)

kinda related...what happens if a 7 foot guy sits in front on u in the movies and u can't see a damn thing and there are no spare seats? do u get a refund?

One thing I think maybe a solution.......why dont they pay extra and fly business or first class........larger seats....more room....and still cheaper than the cost of two seats in economy!!!!

I was amazed at how much it was going to cost my family and I to travel across the state to visit my mother!!!! My 11 mth old (couple of years ago...and the price has increased since!!) was not allowed to travel on my knee.........we were supposed to get a seat for her.........like @#$#@ we were!!!! Hense we didnt go and made the old girl fly down to stay with us!!!!!!

Could they also send the smelly people down to the "holds" so they don't bother other flyers too??????

There's an airplane charter service in Las Vegas that will take you up and fly you around for an hour or so. Yeah, so what, you ask? It doesn't have seats, just a queen sized bed in back with a sound-proof wall seperating the back from the cockpit. There's also a video camera set-up if you're interested. If I remember correctly the price is in the $400 range. No, I'm not speaking from experience.

Doesn't matter. If you're taking up two seats you should have to pay for two seats. The only exception I can think of on such short notice would be if a person can PROVE a medical condition which causes the obese condition. Even then I think the person should have to pay extra, but not the full two seat price.
Next time you are on a plane and have an empty seat next to you; Don't use it. If you do for any reason, you should pay for it.

I don't see anything wrong if someone obese or not, using up an extra seat if the plane is empty.

If it is full, then they should have to pay for it.

How many times have you seen a kid lay down on more than one seat. Should they have to pay? I don't think so. Same for an obese person.

:) very nice. i tend to feel sorry for people too but i think i'd not like being made uncomfortable by a fat or smelly person. i think tho the airlines should make a few special seats available to accomodate larger persons. tough call.

Interesting topic. I think there should be special, bigger seats made available as someone had suggested, and have them cost extra. This would probably only be realistic on the big commercial planes.

When I read this thread, I couldn't help but think of handicapped people too. Accomodations for handicapped persons have been made, I don't see why accomodations for obese people couldn't be. It's unfair to have to suffer enormous discomfort because of an obese person.

Also, I do agree that it is outrageous that an infant would cost the same as an adult if they could just sit in your lap (if the plane crashes, you're all fucked anyway). Just sayin'.

There are larger seats, it's called First Class. You pay more to be more comfortable. And a First Class ticket is cheaper than 2 Coach class tickets.

why not.....They can afford junk food, they can afford to pay for the extra room covered by their fat arse!!! lolol

But speaking as an "ex fatso", the simple fact(aside from discomfort) of knowing that ure taking up so much room and that other people can notice is often payment enough!!

It is not uncommon for us to get passengers who try to get a flight attendant to move thier fat asses into first class after the plane leaves the gate.

We had this HUGE lady once, started making a scene. She was SO FAT the seat belt extender wasn't big enough. She was obvously uncomfortable cramped in her coach seat and was demanding that the flight attendant find her a First Class seat to accomodate her. Well there were no open seats so the fat ass starts yelling up to the front of the airplane calling all us "Rick Folks" to get off our High Horses and relinquish a first class seat for her.

The Pilot, did a U-Turn, returned to the gate where the fat-ass was promptly escorted off the airplane by federal agents for failing to comply with flight attendant instructions and harassment of other passengers.

In all my years of wirking for the airline this was the first time the passengers ever applauded the pilot for delaying the flight.

Make the fatties pay.
