Any large-screen tv experts?

The review (for the 52 inch model) says it's a good one, but if anyone has anything to contribute I'm all ears.

the first thing you have to look at is the viewing distance from the TV. for a 62" TV to look "right" and not pixilized you better be at least 20" away.

If your viewing distance is less than 8' you don't need anything bigger than 42"...

Lol. I know a little about tv's, but not enough to help you. I'm too poor for large screen tv's.

I'm trying to get back on IM regularly now, just been busy with work and shit. I cant believe how quickly you fall out of the loop after a few weeks

First of all you've been gone a lot longer then a few weeks. And secondly, it only seems like things move quickly here, most of it is just Min0's incessant (and incestuous) whoring.

i use to work at Circuit city in the TV department and if your gonna spend that much by a lcd big screen there way better larger viewing distancem no screen burn if you play video games and can last 30 years. There sweet and you can get a 50" for around the same price. by sony tv's by the way there the best then hitatchi.

Bump to that, my father has one and hit has shit the bed, was never very good in the first place.

I would personally go with the Plasma if I had the choice. Thankfully, i choose neither, we have an HD projector and screen so we watch TV projected to a 72" screen, in High Def which is awesome come sunday football. Only issue is the fan broke, but I "engineered" it so there is no more issue.

Plasma has the best picture quality but they only last 4-5 years on average and cost way more to run than a LCD. I ain't paying 3-5k every 5 years for a tv.

From our own experience, we've had our projection tv for about 8 years now and my Grandmother had it for probably 3 before that - and it's still going strong.

I have hear (through the rumour vine) that DLP is the 'new' wave of the future.

I've got the Sony Grand Wega 50" rear projection LCD. I've got no complaints at all about the LCD. I mainly watch DVDs but it does fine for sports and regular non-HDTV shows. Its only 14" deep, doesn't weigh much and was about $3K less than a plasma when I bought it.

There are rules of thumb out there as Lam offered. But ya gotta know my friend that those rules are for normal people. You do not qualify as normal Max. I had a 62" I watched from 7' away and loved it. Like being at the theater.

Plasma's are not long for this earth. With a plasma each pixel is gas charged. When that positive gas charge equalizes with its environment, as it will constantly attempt to do, you get a single dark dot where that dead pixel should be ... times the number of failed pixels. The warranty on any plasma requires you to accept several dead pixels before they replace the unit. The warranty is short for a reason. Expect no more than 5 years out of your plasma TV before you see many dead pixels.

LCD and DLP are the next gen. DLP has been well-received in the home theater world primarily due to two video quality advantages - better contrast and the lack of pixelation. Blacks are solid and well ... black while LCD's have had a more washed out dark color pallet. Todays LCD's are better but DLP's still kicks ass. One benefit of LCD is that it controls red, green, and blue independently through three separate LCD panels. You have better control over color adjustment allowing you to change things to suit your own eyesight. Since you can see the colors like magenta and fuchsia better than normal guys Max you might want to consider that. Reduced pixelation is another benefit of DLP. LCDs were always known for their visible pixel structure, often referred to as the screen-door effect because it appears as though the picture is being viewed through a screen-door when you stand within 5' of the unit.

Mitsubishi has the best picture IMHO. Sony is not bad but look at their service history before you buy one. I did home theater installation work for while as an independent contractor. The owner of a very large and busy electronics repair shop I contracted with loves all the work he gets from Sony products but complains that their connectors, sockets, and almost every part has a proprietary shape unique to them. You have to order Sony parts or you are screwed. I steer clear of Sony now.

My next unit will be the 62" Mitsubishi High Def DLP. Here is a Plasma vs LCD vs DLP comparison. What ever you choose enjoy!

This is their site showing the *825 I need. That special anti-glare is a must for me. I gave all of our stuff to the ex so I can start new and will spoil my self with this. It is not their top of the line but still good enough for me. I've seen their top of the line diamond series and I thought it sucked for the $20,000 or so it was priced at ... and this is better IMHO. With the larger screen on their $20,000 unit the picture lost its edges while not looking at something in HD format and most things still are not yet in HD. Colors on the 62" are brighter, the edges are crisper, and the price is waaaaay better. 62" is big enough for me anyway.

BTW Max that *825 has a built in hard drive with TIVO like functionality. A little tweaking down the road when the first HDD fails or is just too damn small will be in order.

Nah, too much for me. I'm gonna go with the 525 one. Still need to get a good sound system for it, so that will set me back quite a bit more $$$. On the down side, I had a chance to see the 525 in action (both the 52 & 62 inch models) at the local Best Buy, and it didn't look all that great compared to the Samsungs and even JVC's. I was very disappointed in the picture quality. I know they don't tweak them right in the store, but it really did look noticeably worse then the other ones.

I've owned a little 20inch mitsu for like 10 years and it's got the best picture (for the technology back then). I also own a mitsu hifi vcr which is just as awesome....

now if they could only make cars that well...

The Mitsubishi has a glare problem from the screen used on the 525 and 625's. Was glare the issue max? It is not in the world of acceptable reality to me that you saw a bad picture from a Mitsubshi DLP. I contracted with Best Buy as well as Circuit City. Both of them reduced picture quality to move other brands. I talked to several managers who all called it as a way to move "overstocked" merchandise ... meaning they bought a crap load at a great deal and wanted to blow em out for the profits. When the sale was over the remaining sets were retweaked back to quality.

Wrench my ass ... I am on a mission for THE best new unit I can get. Till you chimed in it was the 62825 from Mitsubishi. Please add any thing you can to help us out in getting this right. I'm looking at spending around $10,000 on my next TV and would really be greatfull for whatever help you have to offer.
