hey question about using a training belt, A guy i used to work with who was a Personal trainer and BB always yelled at me for not using one. i never used one until recently. and the couple of times i used it for dead lifts it seemed to restrict my movement to much, and when i took the belt off it was easier? Any comments on why this is??? i have had serveral ppl spot me on occasion and they said my form was fine. imy just confused???

Belts are for the weak. If you have adequite core strength then you dont need them. Belts just make you weaker, and more prone to injury.

i always thought never use belt, straps, and what not unless u had too.

No belts... cos if you dont use it, you are actually making your torso and lower back stronger...

Aren't belts supposed to prevent injuries or is that just bs.

It's BS.
I was asking the same question a while ago. Just keep strengthening your lower back and abs and you'll get the natural belt. If you keep using the belt, your body will addapt to that fake strength and as soon as you take it off one day, you might be prone to injury (hernia) because that section of your body stays underdeveloped and weak.
P.S. If you are a powerlifter than I'd say use it.

Im sooo ANTI Belt!!!! :fire:
work on deveoping your stabilizer muscles and you wont need a belt. if you feel you cant lift the weight without that support then cut back on weight until you build up those muscle to move on without a belt!

No belts unless you are trying to hit a true 1RM like in competition or training for a competition. Other than that strengthen your core and you will be fine. No wrist wraps either.

I don't use belt!
Most of the cases leads you to bad methodology of execution and abdominal dscontraction!
Just to use in extreme cases, just like wrist warps!

I dont use a belt, I go as heavy as 3 reps for deads (SLDL specifically).

I don't use em,
never bother with em!
Belts are a crutch
Strengthen your lower back and abs!

READ THIS POST. IT'S THE BEST ONE YET. Atherjen took the time to explain WHY to not use a belt rather then take a macho approach and just denounce them. (belts are for wussies) Those types of responses are worthless and explain nothing. The point is as Ather said so inteligently is belts do not allow you to work the most important stabilizer muscles to their potential.

Taking M1T again Fire, or you just in a bad mood cuz St Joe's lost? ...or maybe you are just sucking up to Atherjen.

For years I used belts and wrist wraps, but for the reasons cited above, ceased using them and have never looked back. I swear after I stopped using wrist wraps, my forearms grew a good 3/4".

I believe that although I still use them when my grip gives out but I don't abuse them. As for a belt, my back never felt better since I stopped using it also as a crutch although due to my severe back injury, I still use it with very heavy squats because just the weight on my shoulders without even moving causes severe lower back pain which froms from 2 discs, not from muscle. The belt supports the discs as an ace bandage would for a sprained ankle. I still don't use it until I get to a point where I feel it immedietly just lifting the bar off the rack.

OH and no M1T yet. that was just me being my nasty old self bro.

Yes I know Jersey and it's all good. I don't mind. I actually probably deserved it!!! but you know what I was saying. Someone asks a question and the responses he receives are nothing more then..."I don't use one" or Belts are for the weak doesn't really explain anything. I'm sure the guy really doesn't care what people think in that regard but expects to get a meaningful answer as to the whys or why nots. Do you feel me? hahahahaha

Unless you are a power lifter, belts are useless. Power lifters need belts cause their core strength will never support the loads they lift. And thats a fact.:D

Sorry Man
I'm not a real wordy guy.
Besides

I thought it'd be best to be brief.
I been around awhile,
so I know what works for me.
I'll be more specific next time

Good point!

If your "core muscles" (abs, lower back, etc.) are strong a belt is not really needed, and by using one it's a crutch that will hinder these muscles from being strengthened.

I have been using a belt for many years on heavy squats and other heavy lifts, and I found that after strengthening my core I do not need a belt.

Now that is from a bodybuilding persecitve only, if you're involved with powerlifting and doing very heavy singles and doubles you probably should where a belt on those lifts. I never go under 4-5 reps on a set, so that does not apply to me.
