Best Back Excercise

there is no BEST. It is important to train in various planes of motion.

I am quit partial to pull ups though.

I like pull ups also

Bent over rows for mass. Pullups you can never go wrong with.

If I could do only one movement I'd do bent over rows.

Bent over rows make me thick. I also have to agree on the pullups.

Me too, I took your advice on those about a month ago and I put about an inch on my back.

ever since i got a chain belt and started adding a plate or two in my pull up routine my back started exploding. highly recomend the pull up and its variations.

:rocker:

I just brought one and I can't wait to use it.

Pullups, chinups, and various forms of rows are all great. I tend to pull a bit too much with my biceps when rowing, but I'm getting better with that.

Same thing here, but it's amazing the results you get when you do back the right way.

like P-funk said there isn't a best.. but if I had to choose one to do I'd pick WG Pullups

Back is so complex... much more complex then say 'arms'. If I could only do one back movement, it would be deadlifts, with bent over rows second. Never seen a world or national class powerlifter with a small back :).

Deadlifts and Pull Ups.

Bent-over rows did nothing for me. But, this is just me.

Were you doing them correctly? They add so much thickness.

T-bars are also good.

Perhaps he used too much weight? Just recently I dropped a few pounds of my rows and concentrated on squeezing at the top and taking it slow. It felt like I had a sunburn on my back. Good stuff.

haha yeah that analogy hit it right on the head...really emphasize the squeeze and you'll be feeling the burn for some time.

One of the best backs I ever saw, was a guy who rowed with only 225 sloooooowly. One of the local 300+ pounders also prefers slow back movements. But look at Ron who needs no such limitations, 495 at full speed...

I like bent over db rows the best. Pull ups are good too.

Thats hard to do that weight at a slow pace, once I go over 185 Lbs. on rows I start to use a bit too much momentum. I hope by the end of summer I reach 225.
It's funny cause people look at me like a freak when I do bent overs, I'm the only one who does them there. I go to Bally's so that would explain it.

I personally believe there is no substitute for wide grip pullups, in front and behind the neck. I see many, many people in the gym you just do pulldowns because pullups are much harder but it is different mechanically and just doesn't hit the lats the same way.

When I first started lifting I hated pullups. But then I read an article in a magazine about the US womens' ski team. Their coach had them start on a routine to strengthen their backs and this included behind the neck pullups. Now like most women when they started they could do only 3 reps or so in the first set...even great atheletes such as these. So he had them start trying to beat their max reps each workout for every set, pause at the top of the movement for each rep, and in a matter of a few weeks these women were pumping out reps with their body weight. Next he started adding weight belts and plates. Needless to say, it was very effective and these women skiiers could handle 25 ~ 45 lbs in plates and still pull reps which I think is fantastic and many men in the gym cannot do the same.

So anyway, I follow that same routine and it's worked great for me. I also love T-bar rows.
