i watched the 2010 worlds strongest man contest for just a bit yesterday, and noticed a few of the competitors looked pretty built and ripped vs how they looked a dozen years ago.

they are all the strongest in the world, but some seem to lack the big fat guy look from years past. different training? just a different athlete?

also, a bud of mine told me about lou ferrgino in a car commercial and commented on how small his arms are and how small in general he looks. i know he's 59 but i finally seen the commercial and was amazed at how he looked.. he looked like the salesman in that commercial and not the former mr usa and mr world and mr whatever elses he was.. in interviews he said he still trains hard... would it be the lack of drugs that make him look like an average guy now, or lack of the intense way he may not be training now?

for me, whatever the age, i would hate to look like he did, and look like he currently does.. i know you slow down with age and he no longer competes, but there are guys at my gym at 60 that look way better than he does, and all they do is train hard 4 days a week... wonder if its the lack of the drugs they all took that gives them just an average look now??

lots of the bodybuilders now look terrible. seen zane? arnold..they all said in interviews they still train.. ken waller looks bad too..wonder why these former mr worlds all look like a normal gym rat now? some guys at their age looks like they never aged and still could compete, even at 60..

injuries, laziness, lack of drugs? wonder why all these top stars look so normal now, when some of the older top stars still look the same?

Most of these guys are just getting older. I'm a little surprised about Ferrigno, but Waller has had some health problems, and is much older that Louie. I also suspect joint issues have more to do with it than drugs. Plus, all these guys are doing other things and probably don't have much time to focus on training.

I know exactly what car commercial you friend is talking about and Lou does/did look rather small. much smaller than when he appeared on the show King of Queens years ago.

I think most of it has to do with the fact that when you get older, you just cannot train with the same intensity and lift the amount of weight that you could as a youth. This is probably due to joint pain and just general wear and tear. Hell, I'm only 33, but after playing college football and 20 years of lifting weights, I wake up sore every morning somewhere. I can't imagine how my joints will feel in my 60's after 40+ years of heavy lifting. Someone get me a f**king wheelchair!!!!

Seriously. Ferigno and Arnold are pushing 60. What do you want them to look like?
These guys used to squat 500 for reps. They are like any other atheletes. When your prime is over, your physique follows Plus they arent on 3 GRAMS of top notch gear a day anymore either.

A lot of strongmen and powerlifters have started to figure out that carrying a lot of additional mass hurts their performance. The powerlifters in the lighter weight classes have always been relatively lean (not like bodybuilders, but still fairly lean).

Basically today's powerlifters and strongmen are paying more attention to GPP because they've figured out that increased work capacity allows them to train a lot more effectively.

Another thing is that a lot of these guys have other goals besides winning strongmen competitions. There are plenty of strength athletes for whom bodybuilding is a "hobby".

I think the perception of a lot of these sports is going to change once people realize that the athletes competing in them are no longer overweight slobs.
