For martial art's most of your power comes out as you exhale when punching and kicking, also is a big factor when sparring,so it might apply to doing heavy lifts in relation to your exsplosivnessmin0 lee said:I was told about this years ago and for some reason it feels good while doing benches. But I still don't know why.

Pylon said:The idea is that it takes longer to breath in thru the nose than the mouth, so your inhale is longer and will be deeper.

That is true! I do hold my breath as I push the weight up and then let it out at the end of the rep I did chest today and that is exactly what I did.Flex said:you're supposed to take in a deep breath before you lift the weight, cuz it does give you more power. If you've ever tried to lift a heavy ass weight after you blow out all your air, you'll know why people take a deep breath in.

I've had a deviated septum since birth which has been improved slightly with 2 operations so breathing through the nose is impossible most of the time.Flex said:uh, when i'm training, i can't.

same here. I took a heavy shot square to the snot box a couple years back and that, coupled with allergies has rendered my nose useless.FishOrCutBait said:ive got the allergies, so... My nose basically just takes up space on my face

Me too. I find that taking a deep breath and holding it helps stabilize my core on heavy lifts.Tommy said:That is true! I do hold my breath as I push the weight up and then let it out at the end of the rep I did chest today and that is exactly what I did.
For me breathing through my nose makes it worse because I feel I'm not getting enough airLAM said:good way to avoid side stitches/cramping
