I have been eating those water-packed can tunas for some time now since the have alot more protein, very little fat and even Omega 3 and Fibre compared to those typical can tunas with added mayonise and chilli.

However, whenever I eat those water can tuna, I'll always pour out the liquid and try making it as dry as possible, than throw in 1 tablespoon of mayo.

My question is, am I throwing away any of the good stuff when I drain away the water? Or will I still be able to intake all the protein, omega 3 even if it is completely dry?

I actually eat it straight out of the can sometimes, because I got tired of mixing it with some foods (mac and cheese), and its alot of work to mix it dry.

I think its the mayo thats evil, I dont think there is anything too bad about draining it, not sure though. I do not own mayo at all, although when I was younger I loved Miracle Whip.

If eating a tuna sandwhich, I like onions and pepper, along with the regular stuff, no mayo though.

you will be just fine draining the can of tuna, but if you want to keep the water in it that is perfectly ok.

The water drains a lot of protein, you should drink up if you can

You're joking right?

I used to drink the water from cans of peas, I dunno about Tuna though.

I used to eat the tuna right out of the can and add mustard. I'm pretty sure draining it is OK, though.

Nothing wrong with draining it. Nothing wrong with not draining it either.

Other than I'd puke my guts out trying to eat it with the water!:barf::laugh:

You people who eat it without draining it must have strong stomaches.

oops, that sounded like I don't drain it. Of course I do. Personally, PB, not draining it would make me sick as well. Keep on draining mm :)

Well I like my Tuna wet and sometimes I'm not in the mood for mayo.. can't stand mustard and I sure ain't putting ketchup on my tuna!!!

That dosent make much sense to me, how would water drain the protein? I love the stuff, although those of you who are drinking the water, I must agree, must be dedicated becasue that is gros as He$#!

Its very moist and easy to eat out of the can with water, I don't get why its gross...

There is protein in the water. Seriously. I have seen many Danish Bbuilders drink that crap after eating the tuna with rice or somen'.

Water is water.

Tuna is tuna.

Protein is protein.

Water has no tuna, because it is water.
Water has no protein, because it is not tuna.

Y'all keep on drainin', lol...:)

Now they sell tuna packed in olive oil. I ususally just toss it in a bowl w/ chopped onions, dill pickle relish, sea salt & pepper.Sometimes I have this on a bed of lettuce.Protein, fiber,& healthy fats in a quick meal. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

rks1969...is that meal actually good-tasting? As in, could I make this every day for a while and survive? :)

Any ideas on the nutritional info as well?

I've been buying it in the pouches. Moist, but doesn't have all the water, and I think it taste better from the pouch. Honestly, I've never checked the difference in the stats between canned and pouched tuna. I'll have to look into it.

I normally eat it by itself, or throw it into a salad and mix it around a bit. I'm still a big fan of tuna casserole, but I don't eat it as much as I used too.

I eat this mixture almost everyday. It's pretty much the same as regular tuna salad--the olive oil replaces the mayo & is probably a better source of fats. The carb count from the onions, pickle relish is negligible @ best & won't count in your daily calorie totals.I left my diet journal @ work ,but I guesstimate the protein @25-30g/can
& the fats @ around 14-16g/can.
Don't make the mistake I made & leave out carb up days, you'll go crazy.:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Olive oil beats real mayo any day. real mayo contains trans-fatty acids.

The ratio of EFA's in olive oil is poor.

You'd be better eating the tuna and then some nuts, or using walnut oil or something to that effect.

Anyone tried the Udo's Choice oil blend? ...it is supposedly the perfect ratio of EFA's.

:)

draining it gets rid of excessive sodium, mustard and hot sause are my favorite.

ops , sauce that is

I have also been buying the pre-drained pouches. The cost a little more, but are worth it to me for the convenience. I don't have time at work to drain the can, it's so much easier to tear open the pouch. I do not mix it with anything.

The nutritional information is basically the same, but it depends on the size of the can to the size of the pouch. Cans and pouches come in two different sizes. The small pouch is considered one serving and has about 25 grams of protien, if I remember correctly.

I buy the Albacore tuna in water, in the pouch. It's yummy! :D

I use Udo's and it tastes great! :thumb:

I drain my tuna cauz I don't want the extra sodium that's in the water.

I'd like to try Udo's, but DAMN....it's expensive (IMHO). I'd rather just eat foods that supply most of those essentials than to pay what my local retailer is asking for it.

He must be financing a new Lamborghini or something. ;)
