I've always thought it is a misconception that doing cardio catabolizes muscle, as long as you are eating enough and still lifting weights don't worry about it. IMHO, I say go ahead and do 70-80% THR.

Alot of people don't realize that when doing cardiovascular exercise they also need to leave time for recovery.

Doing both is adding more stress to the body.
So now you need even longer periods to recover.

Scotty, you want to look at overall calorie expenditure so doing your cardio at 70-85% of your THR is correct.

Life is a cycle, you cycle your trainig your eating habits.....why not your cardio?
You'd be suprised at the results you will get if you pyramid it.

I disagree, I know a couple of pros that never run becuz of certain level of oxygen intake. Where they start burning muscle, this is probably the heart rate zone your talking about, reason being they dont have hardly any fat to burn, so when your body runs out of fat to burn their goes the muscle, as well as when they reach a certain level of oxygen intake and where you start breathing heavy the oxygen intake is to much..

Papi your post is not clear?
Your body does not run out of fat to burn.

How does the level of oxegyn corealate with burning of proteins?
As well as saying the body can take too much oxegyn in?

Please explain........

I'm a little confused about THR, from what I've been reading in the past, its 70 to 80% of your MHR. And you should do cardio in your THR to burn the optimum amount of fat.

The problem started when I got one of these Heart rate monitor watches and the instruction read that for the best Fat burning, you should stay between 50 and 70% of your MHR.
It went on to state that 70-80% or Fitness Zone as they called it, should only be done "periodically to improve your fitness".

So what now? Do I go with 50-70% or 70-80% and risk cannibalizing my muscles.

Anyone know?

Say i workout on monday wednesday and friday. you said i would need more time to rest so should i do cardio on my workdays or on tuesday and thursday and weekends?

Train hard, play fast, go strong.

If you have the time you can do your cardio in the morning or night and your weights whenever you don't do your cardio.

If you can'then I would do it on your off days or the days you work out,the thing is that you must do your best to promote recovery.

Thats why I argued over on wannabebig that periodization takes into account this,it cycles variables so that you go from high to low or vice versa.

Thats why you simply cannot go hard year round.Thats where the GAS principle comes into play.

Bottom line is that a effective program looks at all variables and cycles them so that you allow for safe and proper progression.

Thanks for your replies guys, I'm gonna mix it, some cardio at 50-70 with some 70-80 mixed in.

Give it a month and see how it goes.

The way it works is you do cardio and burn fat right, When your body burns a certain level of fat it sais i need this much fat in order to operate correctly, so it stores it, it starts to scale out your muscle and fat percentage in order to be proficient, it sais i dont need this much muscle mass it's just causing me to expend to much energy in order to operate, your body is like a machine, It will actually burn the muscle becuz it thinks the fat is more eccential, sucks dont it.
What i meant By your oxygen intake level was once explained to me by a pro, wish i could remember the way he explained it i thought about it i cant explain it the way it was explained to me and dont want to give out bullsh*t info, all i know is it has somthing to do with your heartrate and oxygen intake level..owell hope i cleared up some confusion on that first issue.......PEACE

hmmm, never heard that before papi, but I think that the fat the body needs to operate correctly is very low, like below 4%. I suppose if you were below like 4% or 5% then the body would start to catabolize muscle tissue, but under normal circumstances it doesn't really happen. -Just my 2 cents.

As for the oxygen , I don't quite understand what you are trying to say, but I know that being in better cardiovascular shape means better blood flow to the muscles, aiding in oxygen supply during work-outs and recovery during rest.
