As some of you already know, i'm coming to the good old U.S.of A. to pursue a Ph.D after my current degree in sunny Australia.
I am suure this is probably going to sound a little naive, but here in Australia the only people who carry guns besides the military and police, are ex boyfriends and his friends that one might no longer have contact with.
So, I'm wondering how many of you do own guns and how many of you believe that you wouldn't feel safe without one.

I hope this isn't a taboo subject and I will be happy to hear your input . If you want to comment and on your feelings about that in your particular state, that would also be cool to hear about from you.

Blooming tianshi lotus.

Ummm, are you forgetting all the bikie gangs?

:roflmao: :roflmao:

Are you saying he's a minute man????

:haha:

LOL ... hellllll no. I would have no idea if he has timing issues but I'm sure DOMS is well equipped to handle the job.

You did mention that you had some experience with handguns :eyebrow:

Just sayin' that a woman of your experience with handguns would be better served by glock than a deringer... :D

Definitely! I'd take a glock over a deringer anytime..;)

i like my pistol for the peace of mind protection, i just feel sorry for the poor fuck that thinks he is safe after running 50 yards or so. ill keep shooting with my rifle, and 500 yards is a long way to run with bullets wizzing by your head.

I have a couple rifles, a shotgun and a 9mm...

For hunting, of course :D

But I wouldn't hesitate to use one if needed...

You hunt with a 9mm? Dayyyyyyum.

My latest acquisition, just got it yesterday:

what kind of bear? 'cause...a 9mm...would only piss off a bear...

I read a t-shirt that said:
Sniper: Don't try to run..you'll only die tired.

We only have black bears where we are - no grizzlies..

you don't think it's a large enough caliber for a bear? I would think if you hit in the right spot, it would do the trick.

nope.
I'm no gun expert...so others may have to answer this, but I dunno if even a 45 cal would do the trick. They do have thick hydes. REALLY thick skulls.

Yeah, you definitely don't want to hit them in the head.... that would REALLY piss them off!

I'd just start rapid-firing after that..

well... i just hope you never have to find out if that theory will pan out!

A 9mm isn't even the best man stopper. On a pissed off bear it isn't worth much more than a paperweight. True, I'd rather have a 9mm than nothing, but there are much better choices out there. Most pro hunters and guides won't go into bear country with anything less than a 44 magnum. The bullet needs to get through that tough hide and then still have enough energy to penetrate and do damage to vital organs. All that being said, if a 44 magnum is too big and you can't hit your target, then it's of even less use than a 9mm. Bottom line; use the largest caliber you can accurately shoot. If that's a 9mm, then happy hunting. :thumb:

You could probaly get a .45 with a single stack grip that would fit your hand.

I'm actually very anti-gun. A stint in the US Army infantry taught me that even many 'professional soldiers' can't handle firearms safely and responsibly, let alone the ordinary public. On the other hand I would feel much safer at our upstate NY residence if I had something that shot a 7.62mm round with relative accuracy because there's PLENTY of bears in that area. Also, I really want to go hunting, so and I've been eyeing a Remington 740..in carbon finish...with attached bipod...and a nice magnifying scope sight...drool

see, i'm responsible, but i also love firearms...which is why I don't own one...this is a Catch 22 situation, I swear :(

Also, I feel that 90% of people who currently own guns in the US; shouldn't own them, or have no reason to own them.

And I'm against the ownership of pre-1994 ban military grade weapons...seriously, wtf, do you need a machine gun for?

yea, I'm a pinko commie

What kind of round do you load in that 9mm katt? It'll make a difference ...
