Im currently trying to gain as much mass as possible, but im having a hard time packing on any weight really. I currently weigh about 140 and im 5'6 with about 13% bodyfat. I want to add as much muscle as possible but without gaining hardly any body fat, or as little as possible. how much bf can i expect to gain while trying to bulk? Any suggestions on how to train or eat to get big but with out much bf gain? Thanks for any help!

Rich

it depends on how you bulk. make sure to eat TONS of protein. for your weight, you should be taking in about 200g of protein a day. i gained quite a bit of fat when i bulked, but i was eating 5000 cals/day. if you were to bulk at 3500 calories, and ate really clean (lower fats, more complex carbs) you shouldn't gain a whole lot.

it all depends on you and how your body works........some people put on fat easier then others........as for gaining ASAP well, relax, it takes time to build muscle and with the "i wanna grow overnight" attitude you will most likely just give up when you realize that its not that easy...

im not saying you will, but im saying that thats what many people do...

the body can only synthesize so much new muscle tissue in a give amount of time regardless of the caloric intake. that being said you need to find out where this point is for you.

ok lets say your maitenance cals are 3,500 cals a day. you decide to go on a bulk and are now eating 4,000 cals a day and gaining 5 lbs of LBM a month and 1 lb of fat. the next month you increase your cals to 4,500 cals a day and gain a little more than 5 lbs of LBM and 2 lbs of fat. you now know that if you eat any more than 500 cals over maintenance you will not gain any more muscle but double your fat gains.

keeping track of body fat and cals is the best way to maximize gains of LBM and to keeping gains in bf to a minimum

Thanks for all the help. I will start eating like i've never eaten before and see how it goes. I already eat pretty clean, so all i need to do is just eat more and keep lifting heavy. Anyone have any idea of how accurate scales are as far as bf is concerned? i have a scale that i use at home and that is what i use to see what my bf is at.

Scales arent super accurate in regards to bf%. Not sure on the exat % they can be off, but its pretty high. I wouldnt go by a scale or any other sort of bf% reader right now, jut go by the mirror and try and keep an idea of whats going on.
I just think that bf readers do more harm than good most of the time.

Regardless, keep a tight grip on what you're doing and just monitor your weight. If it starts increasing too fast, back off the calories a bit.

Once you get an idea of just what your body needs to grow it'll be alot easier. I suggest something like FitDay too, its pretty handy, at least I've thought so.

Good luck.
