should you try to get the rest of what you need to complete the 8 hours during the day?

I don't see anything wrong with a power nap if you didn't get enough sleep. In Argentina they do that... but only say they can party until 6am.. haha.

8 hours is tough to get when you have a family, job and responsibilities. Just do the best you can. If you miss 8 hours one night then just continue your day as you would and just try to get 8 hours the next night.

Agreed, everyone is different, some people only need 6, others 8, others 10. I usually need atleast 6, but working night shift has definitely messed up my sleep patterns, I've had great workouts after being out all night, then only sleeping 3 hours, while other times I've had terrible workouts after sleeping 11 hours, too many other factors involved but sleep is a very, very important part to the recovery process.

Read a study the other day that showed a correlation between regularly getting too much sleep (10-11 hours a night) and earlier death.

6-7 hours seems to do me. If i could get away with less i would. The days just aren't long enough!!

I usually feel best between 8 and 10 hour sleep, but every once in a while I have a few weeks where I feel amazing on 6.
I once read an article in I think it was the New England journal of medicine, where they said for every hour of sleep you miss, it takes 8 more to recover.
Based on that theory, I'll be recovered from college by the time I'm 50.

Do you have a link? I was under the impression that you can knock of sleep deprivation with only 1 good night's sleep. For example, if you only got 4 hours of sleep during the work week, and then slept for 10 hours on the weekend you would be functioning normally again.

Sorry, it was something I read at the docs years ago. I'm pretty sure it was in the New England Journal of medicine if you want to do a search.

i would try to keep it all in one run 8hrs in a row, but nothign wrong with a nap.

I don't think people should worry themselves so much about counting hours or minutes. Should base it off of how you feel. If you're tired and you have time, sleep. Otherwise, it's just one more thing to fill up your mind with what has to be done, and balancing the gain or the cut. It's too much. Don't stress yourself out.

everyone is different. it all goes back to how you feel. after 31 years i still cant figure it out. sometimes i feel better with 4 hour than i do with 8. i shoot for 7 then on weekends i usually get 8or 9. in high school, on weekends i could put it away for 12 with no problem. when u get older and have kids, u take what u get and roll with it. i thimk i spend most of my life tired now lol. never been a napper

Got that study handy or the name of it? I'd love to read up on it!

Thanks!

6 1/2 to 7 works for me. However, with more intense training you need more sleep.

the quality of your sleep is far more important than the quantity. one of the main benefits of sleep is that it resets the bodies emotional clock, this is why it's always said to "go home and sleep on it" in turns of making big life decisions, etc.

power naps work for some but not others, but there is surely nothing wrong with them. if you are tired and need to charge then take 15-30 on the couch.
