Life sentence: Man sentenced to life for attack on girlfriend in Flagler, Volusia - Orlando Sentinel
A Palm Coast man convicted of pouring root beer into his girlfriend's mouth and nose until she began to choke, grabbing her by the throat, putting a gun to her eye, threatening to kill her and kidnapping her was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus 20 years.
Major Harris III, 32, was convicted in August of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm and kidnapping with intent to inflict bodily harm or terrorize.
A prison-release offender, he also was convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
After the jury's verdict, Harris pleaded no contest to unrelated charges of failure to register as a sex offender and two counts of child abuse, the State Attorney's Office said.
On Nov. 6, 2010, Harris terrorized his girlfriend at his Flagler County home, then forced her and her two children to ride with him to Volusia County. She escaped and flagged down a DeLand police officer.
Since May 2011, Harris has been serving a sentence of about 3 1/2 years in prison for carrying a concealed firearm and a gun conviction, both in Volusia County.
He previously served nearly four years for aggravated battery on a pregnant woman, depositing checks with intent to defraud, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance. He was released from prison for those crimes in December 2009.
