I am 20 years old, just starting my third and final year at university, have a light build, am 6'2" tall and weigh 12 stone. I have never properly tried weight training before, but have finally given in and stopped lying to myself that it is not important.

I have bought a set of 20kg cast iron adjustable dumbbells and plan on using them at home to begin my training, if I am happy after several months I will then join the gym at my university. I want to improve my upper body strength and abs, currently there is no muscle tone there and I would like to become toned but not massively muscular.

I have had them for a week and found that I can comfortably train with 2.5kg on each one for 20 minutes per day. I feel tired and very hot afterwards, but recover within 30 minutes. I am unsure whether I should use more weight with fewer repetitions or continue using the current weights for longer per session. I have no experience and this is why I am posting here, to ask for advice.

What would a recommended fitness set be for a beginner and how often should I train? If someone does not mind could they make a weekly routine or point me in the right direction for a person like me.

So far I have been doing:

I presume that it is not ideal and that I am not working all of the muscle groups, so this is just to give an idea at what I have done so far.

??? 20x Sit-up
??? 20x Press-up
??? 2x20 Bent over row
??? 15x Upright row
??? 15x Shoulder press
??? 25x Squat
??? 2x15 Bicep curl
??? 10x Chest fly
??? 2x15 Hammer curl
??? 10x Lateral raise
??? 2x15 Tricep kick back and hammer curl (all in one motion
??? 20x Sit-up
??? 20x Press-up

Sorry if any of the exercises have incorrect names, I have gone by the exercise sheet included with the weights. The press-ups that I currently do are female ones as I do not have enough upper body strength to do enough proper ones yet, I keep a straight back but from the knees.

The weights that I have are these:
"York-20kg-Cast-Iron-Case", from Amazon.

Thanks in advance,
Jamie.

Good for you for getting on this.

How about you read the link in my sig on getting started - see if you can find what you need in there?
