No need to flame for the lack of knowing what its called...

I am up to doing lat pull downs at 225lbs for 6-8 reps. I am trying to get to doing pull ups with my bodyweight for reps. I am currently 260lbs. Back in the day when I would powerlift we would load up bars for bench heavier then we could do and just hold it for a count of 10 to get used to the weight etc..and it seemed to help. My question is any logic to think I would benefit from putting say 300lbs on the pull down machine and sitting down with it and hold it there for a count? Would this make me stronger faster?

How many pullups can you do at the moment with bodyweight?

Couple of good techniques i usually get people to do to train towards pullups are either negative only reps, or target sets - pick a number you want to get to and get there by any means possible, whether you do sets of 10 or sets of 1, 5 sets or 20 sets, just get to that number.

Other things are using bands to rig up an assisted pullup, i find supine rows are good to build up to pullups, and static holds at various positions in the pullup.

Not sure about the lat pulldown thing, you could try it. Definitely keep doing lat pulldowns, also do the one armed variation of them.

Thanks Gaz

I can do 1-3 with my weight. I have poor form doing them so I question how productive they really are. My gym does have an assisted machine and I've used that for dips to get me to the point of doing my bodyweight. I can try it with pull ups. For some reason or another I tend to feel more back when doing seated pulldowns vs pull ups. I'd like to get to where I can start my back days with a few sets of bodyweight pull ups as I think pull ups and dips are a great staple to back/chest workouts.

The idea of sitting down with the 300 lbs on the bar for a count is that considered a "static hold"?

If you have an assisted pullup machine available that will be the best piece of equipment for you, honestly. Those things are fantastic.

All other techniques should be used sparingly. With an assisted pullup you can work the movement as you would anything else, so its easier to gauge progress and fit it into your program.

pullups

trojanman
best thing to do to get good at something is do the exercise you want to be good at.
your weak in pullups.... so practice them ..
i'm new going back to the gym, but its the same as when i left the gym for my garage years ago. you'll find the most dust on a pullup and dip bar..
put the ego aside, and do 1 then 2 then 3. then 2 then 1. do the ladder way and pretty soon you'll be up the 1,2,3,4,5,5,4,3,2,1. thats 30 right there..
dont worry about your weight either. there are huge guys doing pullups..
not everyone is good at all lifts.
when i was very young and in gymnastics, we had a guy thet was a beast on dips, but fair at best on pullups. he trained pullups like a mad man and eventually, his pullups matched his dips.
all the best in your training

You could try using a band to assist with your pull-ups.

Gaz, you like the Gravitron? Seriously, I hate that thing. It takes too much of your abs out of the movement.

To the OP, try this: put on a dipping belt with a small amount of weight, such as say 25 lbs, and set up to do chins somewhere that you can stand on a bench set so that when you stand, the chinup bar is at eye-level.

Get yourself to "up" anyway you can, and lower under as much of your own steam as possible. Use your toes on the bench to get yourself back to "up" and repeat.

Thanks for the great ideas and feedback. I am going to try the assisted machine I used to get my dips up to body weight with. I for whatever reason have been getting stronger each workout. So it probably wont be long. I am just one of those want it right now type of people :)

Its real crazy but I've been slowly gaining and then probably the past 3-4 weeks my strength has gone up real fast in all lifts. My body composition has been moving in the right direction too. I suppose the body can grow in spurts.

I could never do any pullups till I used that machine. Dips as well and it didn't take that long. Even though it took abs out of the equation it helped me get used to the technique, and also gradually building up strength to do unassisted and now I can do around 15 of each.

I think its awesome, or at least the easiest way to rig up an assisted pullup/dip. You could use bands or another person or something. Should probably be used with the other things i mentioned though, like negatives, target sets, etc etc.

Soon as somebody can do about 5 pullups with bodyweight they can leave the thing though. Thats enough to work with.
