So we've talked on here before about whether an unarmed attacker justifies shooting them in self-defense. Some of us said one punch can be enough to kill you and it does happen sometimes. Here's a recent instance of this happening. It looks like the guy got hit once, maybe twice, then hits the pavement and goes into a coma. Apparently it was bad enough to pull him off life support.

^^^^ Crazy stuff. :(

answers.yahoo.com offered this re killing someone with one punch.

1. head, many spots due to weaknesses on certain areas of the skull
2. neck, tracheal strikes can lead to collapse or oedema cutting off the airway
3. chest, many areas, in accidentally baseball injuries it can be seen (anyone who know clinicals know this) a second is explained if you take a basic CPR class which is using the xyphoid process
4. liver, certain strikes can break ribs and puncture liver
5. Spleen, certain strikes can break a rib and puncture speen

Also, even more probable is you simply get knocked unconscious and are then completely defenseless. Hopefully they don't stomp your skull in.

9 times out of 10 it's not the punch but the 2nd blow when the head hits the ground or another hard surface that kills or critically injury's the person. not many can cause that kind of trauma with just a punch.

something like 140 of the last 160 stand your ground cases in FL the person shot was unarmed. I can't think of one piece of legislation out of ALEC that is good for society but then again most of the laws written by that organization eliminate accountability unfortunately most don't take the time to ever read them.

Wasnt the punch, wasnt the pavement, it was the family pulling the plug.

Its very rare when one clean punch or blow kills a young, healthy individual. This guy was clearly a senior citizen, hit his head and the family wanted insurance money.

Yes I know. That doesn't really change anything as I imagine most incidents happen on pavement or some other hard surface.

Also, my argument is not that it's statistically likely that you'll die in a fist fight. It's that once an aggressor decides to physically harm you and you feel they could overpower you, you then have the right to defend yourself with deadly force because if they knock you out your life is in their hands.

P.S. I'm talking about what should be legal not the morality of egos.

What if you're the aggressor? Should it be ok to stalk someone, start an altercation and then once you start getting your ass whipped shoot and claim self defense?

Only in the Bronx does an individual want to kill you for knocking off his sideview mirror from his bucket.

Ah, who am I kidding, that could happen in South Central LA, too.

I would use deadly force to stop an unarmed assailant, IF I felt my life was in danger.

There are laws regarding that but this thread isn't about being the aggressor. The number one rule of self-defense is avoiding dangerous situations all together.

FWIW: A friend of mine is a trauma RN and she said you wouldn't believe how many people die from ground level falls and she said this even happen to young healthy people.

I got caught in a rock avalanche that fractured my tibia. I then had to face climb 300 feet, jumping at one point. That same weekend, a girl died at the same place just by tripping. It's all about the odds, I guess.

Pretty crazy man! I bet you felt pretty lucky after seeing that. Probably not at the time though.
