ouch!!! is it supposed to hurt this much?

okay i know you guys told me to take it easy the first few days, and i thought i was. after day 1 back&bi's there was pain but nothing i havent experianced in the past, day two legs- no pain, day three (friday) i did chest and tris. i was doing 4x12 with dificulty on the last few reps of each excercise. as to which excercises i did

bench
dec. bech
inc. bech
dumb flies (ouch)
tri pulldown
bench dips
abs

well i pushed myself but not too hard and i knew i would feel it the next day, which i did. BUT i wasnt expecting it to go into sunday even worse. i can barely lift my arms to put my hat on. i know its supposed to hurt but is it supposed to be this excrutiating? normaly i wouldnt care but i go back to back$bi's tomarrow and it doesnt feel like its gonna stop hurting by then. to check if it would hurt to lift i decided to do a couple pushups to see if i could clech my fists through it. well i got to about two and a half before it was completely unbearable and i was at complete exhaustion. even out of shape i can easily knock out 50-60 push ups. whats the deal? maybe i didnt stretch well enough? could something be messed up? maybe im not drinking enough water (i drink lots). any body have any ideas, or maybe tricks of the trade to help ease the pain. the best i can do is eat tylonol like its a freakin meal.lol

Your muscles should respond very well the first month of working out. I'd take advantage of it, continue to lift hard + Keep your diet in order.
 
I get scared that when I work out while still in pain i feel like im doing more bad than good, even though i know that you rip up your muscles when working out. Though if you pic a scab it scars if you pic it more it scars more. I dont know what to think.

okay update. well i think the problem went away, mustve just been a really good work out. i can still feel it but i can bear with it now. i just doubled up on water and got a full 8 hrs of sleep last night (i didnt get too much sleep this weekend, which mightve been the problem. but i feel okay to get down to the gym now so off i go. sorry i jumped to conclusions i just got worried ive never had the pains drag into the second day off before, at least not that bad anyway. but to answer some questions

yaeh prince i took about two years off, friday was my third day at the gym, and yeah it is alot of excersises but im only going 3 days a week.

plouffe, yeah ive always done great the first few months that is why i made sure to put forth an effort, but was afraid i may have overdone it.

but thanks for the replies and does anybody know any ways to kind of ease the pain in the futer. normally i wouldnt care but i work two full time jobs so it is kind of a pain in the ass not to be able to lift my arms up more than half way, lol
 
As Prince suggested, it sounds as though you're coming back from time off. Last time i started working out after having to take two month off, I could hardly put on my clothes the next day!!! That lasted about 4 days.

I would not work out in this state though. Rest till you can move normally again. Your body needs time to recover and repair itself.

You're overtraining man. Why would you do that much stuff in one workout? How long were you in there? It would take me two hours to do that many exercises with sufficient rest time between sets.

really? maybe i wasnt resting enough? it took me maybe a little over an hour. am i going to fast? how long should i be resting for between sets & excersises? my Trainer okayed that work out is it really bad? like i said i only go about 3 days a week, should i still be doing less? what do you think i should change?
 
There's a fine line between overtraining and working through pain, and it's different for everyone, and you only learn to ride that line through years of training.

I typically do 20 sets per workout when I am in the gym, and that takes me no more than one hour, and I don't consider it overtraining as I've probably gained 8lbs in LBM over three months with a clean diet and no PH. I'm technically on a cutting phase, but I train in the 5-8 rep range, usually shooting for 6, with about 1minute rest. I don't like taking more than a minute of rest for a lot of reasons, and I'm done with my workout before cortisol and lactic acid starts building up to bad levels.

Then again, 20 sets may not be good for a beginner. I guess it depends on your body type and genetics.

I was in pain almost every other day while running track in college, yet my times consistently went down, even as workout volumes increased. Eventually you get used to it. The pain abates once the workout starts.

It's like putting callouses on your fingers from practicing guitar. Teachers say one hour at a time. Steve Vai advocates 10-hour practices. It's up to you to decide who to trust.

There's a difference between good pain and bad pain, and you have to figure that out for yourself.
