Hi,

I'm new to bodybuilding (22 yrs old), two weeks ago while doing dumbbell rows on a flat bench I felt a sharp pain in my left shoulders and I stopped immediately and did not do any weight lifting that irritates my shoulder for some time. The pain was not at the shoulder but near the front side into my collar bone (where the shoulder joins the collar bone) and when I sleep on that side it extends towards my side upto my biceps. Then one week later when the pain subsided I went and tried to do cable flyes for chest and I felt like something was loose in my shoulder joint but did not have much pain it was just like a slip in the joint when I did the exercise but the next day it started to pain again inside my collar bone. Day before yesterday I went to a doctor and he pressed on my shoulder and analyzed my situation and since I did not have any pain when he did that he told me it was not a tear and told me I could do those exercise that does not irritate my shoulder. So Yesterday i felt completely normal I did some pushups and the pain was not there so I felt confident and happy so I tried to do flat barbell bench-press I started out with very low weight 15lbs then 25 lbs and when I tried to increase the weight I felt the joint was getting loose and it was kind of some muscle in my shoulder joint is loose but it did not pain that much when I did the exercise It was just like something was moving around in my shoulder. But today I can feel some pain in the shoulder.
But this pain gradually goes away after 3 or 4 day and I will be able to do all the range of motion with my shoulder but it comes back once I do some shoulder or chest exc. I really want to build some mass but this nagging shoulder pain is so frustrating and holding me from my goals. Why does this happen please give me some advise, am I not giving the shoulder enough time to heal. I can also hear some popping sound in the shoulder when I lift my hand over the head but no pain.

Please give me some advice

ya first I need to get this shouledr problem fixed before I could take any supplements :(.

Shoulders are a complicated joint. It's anybodies guess what could be wrong, it's hard enough for doctors to pinpoint it even with allot of test.

I'm sure others will have better advise but until you get it, take it easy on the shoulder until you are sure whatever it is has healed which from I've been told could take weeks or even months.

thank you Rahaas. Ya I have decided to take a time out, nut the thing is the pain goes away after 4 days I feel all pumped up to do some presses but I think I should concentrate more on cardio and abs for a while till I fix this problem completely.

When my should was injured - which I'm still recovering from, I could still do movements that didn't irritate it: deadlifts, squats, dumbell benches...etc. I didn't stop working out, just avoided anything that would irritate the injury.

Thanks Rahaas.

How long did you wait after the injury to do the movements that did'nt irritate you ?

Big Guy, your 22, and just starting on your Weight Training Journey. Back in the early to mid 70`s, I played football to The Ohio State Buckeyes, as an offensive guard, for a 5 yr period, I was around orthopedic guys, and sports medicine guys, and trust me, we as players needed them. I strongly recommend that you seek out these types of folks, and let them assess your shoulder.
Sincerely,
Big Back 51

The popping noise in your shoulder is normal I think. I feel it every time I stretch my shoulders out. I also know what kind of pain you're feeling. It happens to me once in a while but I've always stopped as soon as I felt a little something and then it will just be sore for about 15 minutes. It sounds like your situation is a little more severe if it keeps coming back and if the initial pain was really sharp like you said. I would definitely go and see a specialist. My friend had a shoulder problem and it happened when he was sort of new to lifting as well. He had to get surgery that put him out for a few months :(

Like big buck says, get to a sports medicine guy.

Shoulders are a very complex joint, just think if it's range of motion compared to any other joint, it's incredible. As such, there are a lot of support muscles that can be damaged or inflammed. I've seen guys with 350+ benches, hobbled, and doing rotor-cuff rehab with 5-10 lb wieghts. The point is, while you can be strong, some of the support muscles can be very weak and need targeted work.

It's best to get professional advice.

I've been to see an orthopedic Dr and did physical therapy and it's been 2 months now and a thousand dollars spent in medical bills. Still dealing with issues in my right shoulder but every week it gets a little better and I am almost back to pre-injury lift levels. I've talked to guys in the gym that pushed too early or without adequate care and it has set them back years and cost them much more financially which is something I do not want to do.

Baby the FUCK out of that shoulder. You can push some things a bit - shoulders are never included in that statement. If you get a twinge of pain doing shoulder work, STOP.

Thank you guys,

I have decided to so some rotator cuff exc and cardio till the pain in my shoulder goes away. I do not know if my insurance will cover my medical expense if I go see a outside ortho doctor so I have decided to wait for another 2 weeks and if it still pains then I don have any other go. I will keep you guys posted.

-Thanks.

Waiting until pain goes away is still not enough. Like Built suggest baby it. Then wait for a good 4 to 6 weeks after the pain goes away to gradually get back into it.
