hey guys, i now weigh in at a whopping 115 pounds (try not to laugh) and I want to go on a bulk, so I decided to start around 2400 calories, and go from there. this is where i get a bit confused. i know i should have at least 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, but if i go with a 40/40/20 macro split at 2400 cals, that puts me at 240 grams of protein a day, more than twice my bodyweight. this seems like a bit too much, should i change the 40/40/20 so that i get around 1 to 1.5 grams per pound?

Why are you starting so high in cals? You should start at 1800 cals and slowly work your way up. Otherwise you have the potential of gaining some fat rather quickly if your body is not use to that amount of cals.

As far as the protein, as you increase your protein will increase. Drink plenty of water and you be fine. You could also change your diet to an isocaloric diet if this concerns you.

Thanks for the response. In answer to your questions, I came up with the calorie count from an excel spreadsheet that some poster (i think gopro) has in their signature. You put in your height, weight, and goal, and it "calculates" your caloric needs. I will be sure to drink plenty of water. One question still though, what in the world is an isocaloric diet?

I like the idea of going isolcaloric (33/33/33). I have found it is a great way to stay lean while increasing my LBM. plus you also will not have such a high protein intake. personally I go by 1-1.5 grams of protein per lb of LBM not total bodyweight. fat doesn't need protein.

240 grams of protein a day,
240 grams a day?! Isn't that a bit much? Maybe not, I'm not sure. I take 180 grams of supplimental protein a day along with my regular meals and I am 174lbs right now.

You supplement with 180 grams ????

180g of whey isn't much. IMO the more protein the better.

Come to think of it, a few guys i know eat 20 servings/day of whey. Granted these guys are monsters, but i'm sure they know what they're talking about.

:D cool, thanks. maybe I'll step it up a bit

Im 171lbs but my weight was stagnating at about 152-156lbs for ages til I started a diet with 300 grams of protein(of which 150-160 comes from shakes) each day and its workin great.Previously it had been 180-200 grams protein.

What Jodi means is that you shouldn jump more than 250 calories every week or two because your body isnt used to it and might store fat. So unless your eating 2200 calories a day now, which by your weight, seems to be a no(no offense) then gradually make your way up to 2400.:lick:

Just curious, does anyone know of any scientific research that supports this mega protien intake way of thinking. I eat a little more protien than the average person, but I don't see how eating 300-400 grams is really going to help me out, besides the extrqa calories. I may be wrong, thats why I want to see some research....

Thanks

Don't bet on it.

1 serving approx 25-30g X 20 = 500-600 gms per day, supplemental, c'mon man.
Even if you went to 2g per lb of lean mass you'd have be 300 lbs and ripped to shreds to warrant that much. Now I have no scientific evidence either way, but everything I've ever read and heard says 1-1.5 g per lb of lean mass per day is good for a BB.

The only thing that eating that much protein will do faster than the lower protein diets is deplete your bank account.

Sure, protein helps you grow, but you can grow effectively on 1g of protein of protein per pound per day. Some, espeically if new to lifting, can achieve good growth on as little as 0.8g of protein per pound per day (if you are natural). For most BB, anything between 1g and 1.5g per pound is effective.

Using carbohydrates to fuel your body and gain those calories is a much cheaper, much more effective means of adding lean mass.

exactly. Carbs are a much cheaper source of calories than protein. For the extra benefit (if any) of taking in so much protein you'd be spending heaps of $$.

well, that's just what a few guys i know do. they literally have a closet FULL, as in a big ass pile almost to the top of full, unopened tubs of protein.

these guys are HUGE, so i take their word for it:shrug:

it all comes down to "it's better to have too much protein" than "not enough".
It is very hard to get 'not enough' protein if you follow a typical BB diet. Anything with above 0.8-1g per pound is more than enough for most, esp. if you then go on to include your incomplete proteins (eg: nuts, seeds, grains, legumes) as well.

Eating the amount of protein you are saying your friends take is just a waste of money and good protein powder... Not to mention it is (sorry to say) pretty stupid...

Also, they better be hydrating themselves well... Although a typical high protein diet will not effect a healthy kidney (if you make sure you are sell hydrated and all those other things), there is a limit as to the filtering capacity of the kidney and when you start getting to the levels you speak of they would want to be careful...

Well, each to theirs. However, don't be too quick to attribute their hugeness to those boat loads of protein . There may be many other factors.

They don't mind. That's all they do.

I don't, but it's hard not to listen to ripped monsters.

And of course there's other factors.
