Hey, I've been doing dead lifts on back day, and stiff leg dead lifts on leg day. I usually try and hold onto the bar for as many reps as I can, and switch grips when I can't hold on any longer, but usually by my last set I have to use my straps. Is there anything I can do to help my hand strength? I was looking on line at some heavy grip hand grippers, but didn't want to waste my money.

I thought I'd just stay at whatever weight I'm doing until my hands can handle the weight for all sets and reps, but not sure if that's the right solution because then my legs and back will suffer as I wait on my hands to catch up.

Any advice?

i didnt know you deadlift for hand stregth, get some fucking straps.

Next...

I can dead 650+ I use straps. nobody looks at me like I am pussy if anything when I lift heavy weight they get scared

i deadlift for the obvious benefits, also for grip strength. i feel if i cant grab it and hold on i shouldnt lift it. you can do finger curls (barbell behind back and roll down to the tip of your fingers then squeeze it back up), farmers walks, and another thing that has helped me was reverse grip bar bell curls.

I was thinking the same thing. If I can't hold it I shouldn't be lifting it. Thanks for the exercise tips. Had to look up farmers walk. Do you do these on arm day at the end of your work out?

use fat gripz for a while. cheap and effective

Are you sure you're not already overtraining your grip? If I was doing high reps (which I would never do) I would just use straps. That way I'd stop when muscle fatigue set in, not when I couldn't hold on any longer.

To increase grip strength do several holds for time after working deads. Actually, my grip strength increased the most doing deads for 25 singles eod working up to about 90% max. I not only acheived my goal by increasing my deadlift max but my hand strength also increased quite a bit without overtraining my hands.

Don't think I'm over training. I only added in deads in the last month am am taking it real slow. I had a back injury early on. I'm doing 3 sets of 8 at 250. I could do more, but I'm not stupid, I'm not throwing that back out again.
I like your idea of holding on the deads. I'll give it a shot.

i dont have a arm day, i do deadlifts once a week, and will do them every other week after dead lifts

I only dead lift a pussy ass weight of 310 pounds I can get that sucker up easy enough it's just my grip aswell...

I think we need to invest in some straps!

LOL...yeah, who gives a shit what the other fucks think.

I could not imagine doing my heavier sets of deadlifts with no straps and I would never shoot for my grip to be as strong as my legs. NothinG wrong with using straps.

I do bodyweight forearm curls - while hanging from the pull up bar - when I can't do anymore, I just hold on till I drop - I do one set of this 2-3 times a week; my grip strength has gone waaaaay up since I started doing this. Just a thought.

SFW beat me to it. I'd say you just need to JO moar often. Also, when you're banging your mom, use both hands to choke her out instead of one.

As always,

GICH!

i use a really thin towel when i deadlift. straps dont have a place in deadlifts until ur lifting over 600lb. i can lift 450 without chalk, straps or the towel but if i want to go more than 3 reps i need the towel.

Deadlift Grip Strength

At some point everyone grip will give out when deadlifting for reps.

Is there anything I can do to help my hand strength? I was looking on line at some heavy grip hand grippers, but didn't want to waste my money.

Hand Grippers Don't Help Deadlift Grip Strength

Squeezing hand grippers do little to help with deadlift strength.

Three Type of Grip Strength

1) Crushing Grip--Hand shake type gripping movements. Gripper work for this.

2) Pinching Grip--Fingers on one side of an object, thumb on the other.

3) Support Grip--Holding on to a deadlift bar while doing reps.

Support Grip Training

1) Thick "Fat" Bars

2) Squeezing a Gripper shut and HOLDING it shut for as long as you can.

Thanks. Good info.

Grab a dumbbell in each hand and hold the dumbbell or even a plate and hold it as long as you can or even do wrist curls.Even doing rows with straps will get the forearms to get stronger in time.

when I get weak hands and forearms it's b/c of my neck...that's my experience. Do your hands ever get numb or fall asleep while you're sleeping?

If you cant grip it you dont lift it? Thats a good way never to progress. Theres nothing wrong with using straps. Im deadlidting almost 650lbs now and if i didnt use straps i would have stopped progressing once i hit 350-400

i feel you man. i can deadlift 500x8, but for grip, i doubt i could even do 405...thats what i get for using straps for years every back workout...

honestly, in my opinion, work on your grip after your back workout...do some dead hangs with the bar and see how long you can hang on to it. And for deadliest, do what you are doing if that works. I like to take the 125 dumbbell in 1 hand, put some chalk on my hands and hold on to it as long as possible. Also one other thing, take two 10 pound plates put them together and hold on to them as long as possible..its not just the combined weight of 20Lbs that will help your grip, but also the force of your hands holding the plates together for as long as possible.
