workout frequency

I'm not sure how many times per week I should be working out. I've been doing a four day split (M/T/Th/F) targeting different muscle groups, hitting some 1x, and others 2x/week. But I've read that "hardgainers" such as me (I'm 5 10, 160) should train no more than 3 times/week max., and not to hit any groups more than 1x/week.

Any advice is appreciated.
 
There are a ton of different variables here.

Are you cycling anything?
How much sleep do you get?
How stress and time intensive is your life outside the gym?
What is your nutrition like?
How many years have you been training?
How many sets per workout do you do?

I think you are on the right track with cutting a day from your split... but it is hard to give sound advice without knowing the answers to those questions.
