Ok, my feelings were the same, once I started beefing up my lower back it was almost as if I could do nothing to hurt it, so long as I keep it up that is.

Ok...I'm glad alot of you decided to give this a try. I think it is the best delt exercise out there, and just a great exercise overall.

I noticed a few of you mentioned lower back strain. Well, one of the reasons to do this movement is to strengthen the lower back. You should be strong enough in the lumbars to handle this. I go up to a 110 lb dumbell in this exercise with zero back strain...although not only my delts, but my whole body gets trashed with this weight.

110's huh?, that's impressive. You must be as big as this guy in our gym. He recently cleaned up at his first show and weighed 238. He can dumbbell press 130's with ease. Now he's training for a show in November and wants to weigh in around 245-247. Right now he's around 285.

Very interesting gopro, however I have come to the conclusion that presses are not necessary for medial head delt development.
I only use dumbbell laterals and upright rows for my shoulder training, and I never go heavy anymore! I try and focus on TUT rather than heavy weight for delt training. :)

I'm right w/ you on that one Prince !

Size and strength are not 100% synanomous.

Prince, I know doing TUT lately WAY woke my shoulders up, could partially just be the change of pace, but massive improvement in the shoulder dept from day 1 using this. I'm switching off every other week though as was suggested to me...

this is proabably a really stupid question, and I am probably already doing them just with a different name, but can someone describe upright rows to me?

Oh and GP i did these tonight at the end of my shoulders workout, and holy hell, I raped myself with them. Now my shoulders are doing the "Why did you do this to us" ache. man this is a good feeling!

Grab a barbell, standing upright, and pull it straight up to underneath your chin. Many people use an inside grip, just watch out for your wrists.

Ahhh yes, i do them all of the time, but didnt know what they were called, it makes sense now! thanks bro

No, I'm not quite as big as him...I'm close to 260 now and wish to compete around 220. If I were on steroids I imagine I'd be closer to the 300 lb mark!

Yes, I started to follow that philosophy for a while too...and then I stagnated. I looked at my old training logs to see where my "best" growth spurts came. What I saw was that when my delts were growing fastest I was ALWAYS including a heavy press...even if it was at the end of my routine.

When I went back to presses I found that I was not happy with the feeling a bar was giving me, so I went to heavy seated dumbells. My delts started GROWING again. When I stagnated at 120 lb dumbell presses I started on the one arm presses. It took me some time to get the exact form down to where I liked it...but once I did...WHEW my delts blew up some more! After 2 months of doing the one arms I decided to try to go back to two arms again...the 120s were easy...I nailed the 130s and even managed a single with the 140s.

Never gonna stop PRESSING.......

Good to know the dumbells work, I love those little thingies.

Upright rows for trap development....
-closer grip
-bring bar to chin level

For delt development...
-wider grip
-bring bar to shoulder level

The one arm presses or the upright rows?

No no, one arm presses, I do upright rows just fine - wrists is the only thing that would ever possibly bother with me. Honestly my spine is bothering me a bit, feels like I really did some labor. I did 2 sets, and dropped about 15 or 20 pounds from a regular press, so I used a relatively light weight.

I'm not all that tall, but my back seems sensative to abuse, so I am generally watchfull of stability and weight distro on almost everything, even standing curls I am watchfull of how I stand etc

Hurts around the same spot that I have been hurt doing traps stuff before, can't tell you how many disks down from the top of my neck, but probably 8-10 inches down from my shoulders.

Well, if they truly hurt you to perform them, than forget them, or, do them lighter and seated. They will still help you to develop your delts!

I gave this exercise a try on Friday (last in my routine), and I had the same "problem" with lower back stress. I'm glad to know it's not really a problem at all. Some people looked at me like "What the hell is he doing?" They can all lick my balls. :D

I tried this last friday also, and I got a few weird looks too. I really liked the exercise though. I think it may take me a few workouts before it feel comfortable, but it really worked them.

I felt stress in my lower back also, but it was because i am tall and the bench was so low. My hips were not level with the floor (i.e one was higher than the other) . Once i corrected that, i had not problems with it.

Thanks again Gopro.

I mostly feel it in my upper back, my spine just doesn't dig it :( As of today though it doesn't seem to be bothering me, if I inhale alot of air I still feel it a tad though. Dunno man, but I have to watch my back with just about everything, maybe its a few discs or what I dunno

Thats why I asked about your height GP, because even bending over for sinks that are built low for "average" 5'6" people can be a strain if I do it long enough, doh.

HickeyNC, your there for you dude, screw em - I ignore others in the gym :)

Mudge...something doesn't sound right with your back...have you had it checked?

I used to get weird looks too...I am always making up new and unusual exercises as I'm always looking for ways to improve on the existing ones. New angles, grips, body positions...I vary everything.

Funny thing is, about one month after I do a new weird movement, I look around my gym and see a bunch of other people doing it! I love that1

Not for awhile, I was suspect for Scoliosis when I was about 13ish or so, but this is my upper back that bothers me, which might be a disk or some type of issue. It basically felt like I was doing hard labor building the pyramids or something for a couple days, and I've gotten the same type feeling from not making sure load was centered onto my feet doing traps and letting my spine 'work too hard'.

Any idea if this is a disc issue or something? I drink enough water, 1.5g-2.0g...

Ok, right now if I inhale I feel soreness in a couple muscles next to the spine so maybe I am/was incorrect, and maybe its just back muscles and not spine, which would I think imply that my back is lacking in that area. Its about mid back towards the center though, somewhere around the top of the XMas tree.

You may have a compressed disk or a herniated disk. You may also have injured one of the deep muscles in that area. I'd get it checked.

Oh man, dont worry about me. I could really give a crap about the other people in the gym. I'm there for me and no one else. I just like to pay attention to people whenever I do an exercise that is far from the norm of people just going through the motions. I've gotten more than a few weird looks from people. My gym is a 'Wellness Center"
