I suppose Saving Private Ryan, or any other war movie did so well, not because of the story it told, but because of the "extreme violence" in it. You're pathetic, John H.

Brogers,

The proof is in the receipts at the boxoffice.

There have been a LOT of movies that had very good stories to tell and were very well made and did not bring in much money to their creators at all. In fact that happens a lot. VIOLENCE SELLS. Look at all the other movies that were devoted to Christ and His passion and life that did not fare as well. Also, I think people in general are becoming DESPERATE. I think a lot of people in today's world are seeking "something" and not really knowing "what" and will grasp at anything to save themselves from a personal "drowning" in their lives.

Try making the SAME movie THE PASSION OF CHRIST - WITHOUT - the EXTREME VIOLENCE - and see what the results are at the boxoffice.

You say I am "pathetic" - coming from you I take that as a compliment.

I voted, but I think the term "homosexual" is archaic. I prefer the term "gay." BTW, your puss, Clovis, looks a lot like my Giovanni. I've had him for 11 years from the SPCA in Dallas.

Hi D,

In all honesty, I hate all the terms as applied to people - because each of us are Human Beings and should be equally treated - and recognized for our diversity and variety and the contributions each of us make to this world.

All this hating and bigotry will destroy Man"kind"....

your analysis of the situation is completly incompetent. attributing the sucess of saving private ryan to the violence is absurd. i can name 50 movies more violent with less box office earnings. in the top ten grossing movies of all time your going to see a majority of pg-13 movies and not R ratings. look it up. but just like you john to go off about something you assume to know a lot about but in reality have a very limited and tainted point of view on.

i'm still getting this place in order. soo much painting and so on. it's proving a bigger job then i expected but my son has separation anxiety and it is a mere stones throw from his school so it helps him. he thinks someone is going to steal me when he is at school. when i was goin thru the phase where i liked the rock he used to say "if the rock ever comes here i'll kill him" he's getting over it selectively. he needs me when it's school or me but when it's running wild with his buddies or me he is so out of here. :) he turns 8 july 1st.
glad to see you are still around. i figured you might be busy with spring on your farm. i saw apple blossoms and lilacs the other day when i went for a walk with ty. lovely and the smell mmmm.

Find a way to have Mel Gibson make this movie again WITHOUT THE VIOLENCE and see what the receipts will be.

I GUARANTEE it will NOT make $650,000,000.00 plus. It IS the volence that sold the movie. The story has been told before WITHOUT the violence and not made nearly the amount of money made by Mel Gibson's movie. And he did it ENTIRELY FOR the MONEY.

Hi Rock,

Your son will adjust. It is not always easy though.

Work? YEP! And a LOT OF IT. But it can be fun too.

Yes, I am very busy and do not have a lot of time right now but I still check in when I have a minute.

I am not "gone".

The hype by the media combined with a very well made movie made it so crazy successful. You are dellusional. E.T. was one of the top movies of all time back when it came out. I suppose the "EXTREME VIOLENCE" drove people to see it.

You avoid the argument and just continue rambling about how The Passion wouldn't have made as much money without the violence it had in it. There are plenty of slasher films that failed, plenty of movies with so much gore that they aren't even remotely believeable and did terrible at the box office.

Just like my examples of War Movies, the violence in it was there because it happened, not to draw people. It showed suffering that occurred. War Movies show the violence in war, that really happened. You confuse fictional violence with historical truths. Obviously people are interested in the story of Jesus, the Bible is the #1 selling book of all time. Is it really that hard to believe?

Since you know Mel Gibson's secret to making millions, why don't you go make a super violent movie and see how well it does John? Since that's the only reason his did so well, right? You are blinded by your ignorance and close-mindedness.

did you ever think it had anything to do with the fact that it had an amazing amount of publicity before it was released? how mel used 30 million of his own money to finance it and how jim caviezel (dont know spelling) was the main character? the violence did very little for the movie ( it was even re-released without it,) and people wanted it without the violence. many thought the violence was a draw back to the movie. and by the way when was any major film done about Christ previous to this? the last movie i can name that used the bible for its story line was the 10 commandments with charlton heston, if i remeber correctly that one did pretty good as well. maybe there are enough Christians in America who are willing to pay to see a well done movie about something in the bible. did you ever think of that.

john your arguement does not hold water.

Hi Brogers,

I can assure you I am not at all dellusional.

I stand by what I said. Movies about the Passion of Christ have been made before without the violence and did not sell nearly as well or were as "popular".

The pre-"publication" hype certainly did help sell the movie but the "ignorance" and "closed-mindedness" AND hysteria AND desperation of "religious" zealots and desperate people helped too because they are so lacking in their personal lives and so terrified of the unknown they are willing to accept or swallowing anything shoved their way or "shoved down their throats" as a panacea...

The movie would not have done nearly so well had it not been immersed in violence.

And what did Mel Gibson DO with the MILLIONS he made on the movie and at the expense of those that saw it - expense personal and real and imagined with and within each person...

You mention I should make a movie with violence - I have seen and experience more than I ever care to relate in war and I am not in the "business" of using others at their expense for my personal wealth - and that includes monetarily and personally. I DO NOT and NEVER WILL USE people. That does, however, seem to be to be the "going thing" in today's world and the current measure of "success"... I want no part of that crap.

And I am NOT that kind of person.

Take Care, John H.

The movie filled the bill for DESPERATE people. They were USED. And so too their desperation. And "marketing" sure had a lot to do with the "selling" not only the movie but of the people who saw it.

Desperate people will do desperate things. Even at their own expense.

Something that is really truthful rarely really matters especially if it "doesn't feel good" and/or "everybody's doing it" ...

Every time someone mention either movies this is the first thing they talk about, making the person they told want to see the movie to.

this is the worst explanation i have ever heard. americans have a very individualistic mentality. if we like it we do if not then we dont. we are not lemmings running off the end of a cliff just to follow the leader. come up with a better arguement. this one is worthless. i award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

WRONG. thats not the first thing people talked about when they said go watch this move. grow up john this whole violence in movies kick is a joke. look at the 6 star wars movies. 5 are rated pg one is pg-13 and they make an un-holy amount of money. its not the violence.

i completly disagree. its not part of the american psyche to just blindly follow. if we were that way we would not be having this discussion

if that is the case, why are the majority of the top grossing films of all time not rated R? what a pessimistic view you have

The ratings are only a guide.

And ratings given are done so as not to interfere with the gross profits of the film. As with most anything it is all about the money.
