i have never used chinups in a routine before but from what i have read there the best exercise for lat growth....

personally i dont like doing rows was thinking of ditching rows and using chins, wanted to see what peoples views are on the exercises compared?

i understand that rows would work traps more and probaly scaps more too, however i am specifically interested in lat growth

or purhaps people think pullups are better then rows and chins for lat growth, what yal think?

I think the combination of rows and chins is optimal for growth.

and this^^ .. I would say just do both or switch off week to week .. I usually do a vertical pull lat exercise and one or two horizontal pull lat exercises on my back day, and switch it up between chins, pulldowns, bent rows, seated row, cables, dumbbell rows, etc.

meant scapulas...

im going to do a full body routine, already got deadlifts in there for back so have to choose one more back exercise not particulairy keen on rows atm...

If you only get two exercises. I'd do dead's and chins. Two of the best back workouts ever.

If I had a means to do chins I would ditch the lat pulldown I do in a second

the mechanics of these exercises are not even close to being the same. there is no carry-over in strength from one to the other, this tells you they are not the same.

LAM if you had to pick between chins, pullups or rows for lat growth what would you pick?

iv been looking around the net and i have read before that wide grip chinups are best for lat growth, however are wide grip chinups just pullups, because thats what seems to be coming up on google :/

Both.... I start my back workout with pullups. 3x12 with b/w 240. Then go into bent rows 3-4sets of 6-10 with 425-455. It's all in the angle of the row as to where it's gonna hit the muscle. If there done yates style then it hits the lower back and mostly the lats.

Asking which exercise is "best" for growth of a certain muscle group is kind of silly. Typically a combination of exercises is required. Considering the complex nature of the lats, you need a lot of different types of movements in order to maximally stimulate them. They aid in spinal movements, shoulders movements, and scapular movements.

This ^^^

From what I understand from reading many articles about Lat training, Rows are for Lat thickness and Pullups/Chin Ups/Lat Pulldowns are for Lat Wideness. So do both if you can. But, make sure you research my belief before you believe me because I haven't read the article in months...

Both have their place but if I had to choose one then strictly for lat growth chins and pull ups are optimal.
