As some of you already know, i'm coming to the good old U.S.of A. to pursue a Ph.D after my current degree in sunny Australia.
I am suure this is probably going to sound a little naive, but here in Australia the only people who carry guns besides the military and police, are ex boyfriends and his friends that one might no longer have contact with.
So, I'm wondering how many of you do own guns and how many of you believe that you wouldn't feel safe without one.

I hope this isn't a taboo subject and I will be happy to hear your input . If you want to comment and on your feelings about that in your particular state, that would also be cool to hear about from you.

the stereotypes are all basically true. here in america we are all basically gun-loving rednecks who believe that gun ownership is our soveriegn right. well maybe not the liberals who are really just a small minority that we keep around so we can have someone to shoot at.

My buddy Seb's popular blog/site on the subject of being a liberal gun owner.

Personally, I don't own a gun and I don't think I ever will, unless I'm in some sort of possession of something worth protecting. But, as of now, my wallet, my car, and basic things around my house aren't worth playing cowboy over saving.

I own a gun...

... So I am ready, for "when they come".

First and foremost, don't believe what you see in the movies. This isn't Dodge City of the 1800's and it isn't a Rambo movie. This is the United States of the 21st century. Yes, people own and carry guns. The chances of you ever seeing one are slim to none. If you want to see guns and/or shoot them, go to a gun store. Other than that, you'll notice nothing out of the ordinary.

I own a lot of guns :D Here is a little one

oooh...its all shiny....Pre! You look...a LOT like that dude from 300!
WOW!

good post, mi amigo!

I personally do not own a firearm presently. But I believe in the right for a law abiding citizen to be able to own them.

The only 'soap box' standing on this issue is this:
Guns....are here to stay. Gun restrictions will only take guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens, leaving only the criminal element armed...
I don't see why there are some people out there that don't see that?

I got some rifles, but I need to get a shotgun and a bigger rifle for elk and hogs. I don't like handguns as their only real purpose is to hurt people unless your hiking in Grizzly Country. Best Home defense is a shotgun and a couple of good dogs in the yard

I agree. Dogs and a shotgun are the best combo defense there is. Hell, dogs are usually good enough. Most criminals are cowards, and run at the first sight of trouble.

I'll probably be getting a shotgun for trap shooting as a primary purpose, and defense as a 2nd purpose which most likely won't be needed. I may also eventually get a pistol for range shooting.

Dogs are good enough here in Hawaii, if I were back in Houston I would probably have guns hidden behind bookshelves, under tables and one under my pillow. Right now my Belgian Malinois is good enough protection, she has the sharpest teeth I've ever felt before. While we are playing I end up with little scratches all over and she isn't even biting a little bit. I've watched her chew her rawhide bones and she rips through them like hard butter. I could only imagine what she would do to someones arm or calf muscle. As long as she can keep someone busy for a moment I could get my police baton to pummel whoever is in my house...

Yea, scared to 'shoot' too fast hahaha

I have a couple rifles, a shotgun and a 9mm...

For hunting, of course :D

But I wouldn't hesitate to use one if needed...

Yeah but you're a different kind of girl katt. How many women have even fired a gun let alone own one and know how to use it?
