does the name stand for Vitor Belfort?

Tae Kwon Do

I took tae kwon do for a while. Stopped a few years ago when i moved and the drive to the dojo was too long.

Honestly, I would love to take up some OTHER kind of martial arts. Something more useful and realistic in a situation that would call for some self defense. However, I have to admit that tae kwon do helped me improve my discipline and kept me motivated to try harder in TKD as well as other areas of my life.

Hey Getter, Wheres the pics we were promised?

You promise?

I took Tae Kwon Do long enough to realize that there was a much heavier emphasis being placed on looking pretty, rather then being effective.

Ironically - the forms were my favorite part of TKD. I couldn't care less for sparring or anything. But the forms... beautiful.

Too bad it's kinda useless in real life. I think my next martial arts attempt will be Aikido.

Now you're talking, babe! :thumb:
I thought about taking Aikido after quiting the other one, but then college hit me like a ton of bricks.

Now between work, work outs, and a needy fiancee' whom only my sexual prowess can satisfy, I just got no time for getting my ass kicked daily. :(

this thread and that article i posted has really intrests me,
plus i saw a creative breaking competion on tv last weekend and this one guy took off his robe thingee, laid on a bed of nails and broke something w his elbows, and i was amazed at their flexibility, they jumped and did a split in the air to have enough force to break bricks i think. and they broke all this other stuff "creatively". but some of it was just dumb, like this 1 guy broke things over his head.........yeah thats something to be proud of.

can someone plz explain the kinds of martial arts, what it works on, what itd be good for, ect............plz take into account, that i know Nothing about martial arts, not even the order of belts, what aikado is? jui is tsu? muy tai ching? they all sound like sushi dishes to me or something like that :gosh:

I think I can help....

My Martial Arts Experience:

Black Belt TaeKwonDo (laugh)
Tai Chi (Yang Style 13 Kinetic Movements)
Shaolin Sword Form
Yang style spear
Boxing (as in Western boxing)
Aiki Jujitsu (Ancestor of Judo and Aikido)

I cant claim to be some authority on martial arts but I think I can help a little bit. In general, a martial art can be described as linear or circular and furthermore as internal or external. Internal/External is very hard to describe, but think External = muscle power and Internal = spiritual power. Internal may sound like bullsht, but when you've been knocked down by a 5'6'' chinese man in his late 70's, you will believe too. Linear/Circular is hard too. Think linear = western boxing and circular = "kung fu". Lastly, belts mean shit, there made up so schools have a ranking system and a means of earning money.

Martial Arts of Japanese Origin: Generally linear and external
Karate (many different types)
Judo
Aikido
Aiki-Jujitsu:)
Kendo/Kenjitsu

Martial Arts of Chinese Origin: There are thousands, the most popular are internal and circular

Tai Chi (Chen, Yang:) , Sun, and Wu family styles)
"Kung fu" (shaolin boxing or Wushu is a better term):)
"Animal" style boxing (Mantis:) , Crane, Tiger, Eagle, Snake)

Korean: External and Linear

Tae Kwon Do:) (not really Korean, produced from traditional Korean martial arts to export to America)

SouthEast Asian: External and linear

Thai Boxing ("kick boxing")

Philipino:
Escrima (?)

Brazillian:
Brazillian Jiujitsu (think pre-WWII judo and western wrestling combined)
Capoeira (hard to explain)

Classical Western: External and Linear
Boxing:)
Wrestling
Fencing
Greco-Roman Wrestling

If that helps, great. If not, there's always Google.:)

kickboxing is not the same as karate.
Kickboxing is a generic term nowadays though, just like karate is a generic term. Karate is Asian, while Kickboxing is an American term . Still generic terms that cover a broad spectrum of styles from their respective parts of the world.

Ive been training in Mixed Martial Arts at Straight Blast Gym for about 6 months. Its a combonation of Ju-jitsu, Kickboxing and Wrestling. No forms, no belts, just great teachers and full contact sparing. Its a fantastic workout.

i was curious how many here have had any martial arts training of any kind. i am considering taking up karate or something. anyone care to ellaborate on their experience?

TKD - 3rd Dan
Aikido - 1st Dan
Kung Fu - 1st Brown (have been slacking need to finish)

I hold a brown pants in street fighting. Does that count?.................................Yaknow they must have 400,000,000 chinese kids chained to benches just to produce all the black belts people say they have on the Internet.....................Rich

i used to do something called sporting karate

good for taking out agression and a nice level of contact but fuck im nowhere near flexbile enough anymore

Im looking into Krav Maga.

Krav Maga looks pretty interesting, there is a school by me but a bit on the expensive though!!! Trained and fought in Muay Thai for 5 years, green sash in 5 animal Kung Fu.

Been into MooKWang Taekwondo for 7 years...1st degree black belt. Awesome to build leg strenght, major endurance ,flexibility and discipline....Also really good on " the core" as stability and balance are constantly required....

Im surprised you feel that way, honsetly! I have been training in the MooKwang form of TKD with grand Master Tae E. Lee, 9th degree black belt(about 5"2, 120 pounds all wet, like 100 yrs old, can still do jumping side kicks 2 feet above my head!! Im in aweeee!) for years now. While forms are part of the curriculum, sparring, techniques and actual practice make up most of the classes.

This school is affiliated with the WTF (only tkd assiociation able to compete in the olympics), maybe thats why there's more emphasis on actual effectiveness of the practices!!
