Can anyone relate to this?

I just started to work out after a way-too long hiatus yesterday,
and have noticed all my support comes from my friends, not my family.
In fact, my brother knows I have tried off and on, to bulk up and has told me to give up. I will not, as I'm considering getting certified as a trainer. This summer I will succeed!
My friends support me, so why not family? You would think, I mean WTF????

Is anyone in your immediate family athletic ? did any of them play sports in high school or college ? If not that is you answer..

most people who have never been envolved in athletics can not understand people who are passionate about weight training and wanting to be physicaly fit...

who gives a rats butt what anyone thinks, whether they support you or not, the only motivation or support that you need comes from you, just go out there and kick some a$$, knowing that you are a better person for it

I get no support from either....but thats ok. I think it pushes me to do better. Sure would be nice every now and then to hear and encouraging word or a good job from.....friends, not family. Guess its just the human side of me that gets all....emotional...hehe :teeth:

I get decent support from both... oh well gues im lucky:cool:

haha like Puff Daddy said "can't nobody hold me down, oh no, I got to keep on moving":booty: Like everybody said, don't listen to what everybody thinks. Sometimes that's what gets you through. This can make you work harder. It's easier when everybody supports you. But when nobody supports you, it feels so much better when you prove their ass wrong!:)

This is off the subject but do you go to college is Seattle.
I'm pretty close. Some friends and I were just over there for Hot Import Nights.

When I first joined the gym my dad said it would interfere with school too much, and he said I should forget about it. Well, my GPA has went from a 3.0 to a 3.4, and whenever I walk around with my shirt off I spot him gazing with a proud look on his face.

my parents care nothing about my wanting to be in shape. Every bit of support came from friends. But my parents are also out of shape and dont really care alot about sports or anything. They think its a big waste of time and that I should concentrate on my studys.... but I mean seriously, you need to have a life on top of school

sometimes we forget parents are human too and they make mistakes....im sure they care but just have different priorities,...stay respectful but yet stay true to your heart.

funny thing is when i was younger and not as healthy and i would go for dessert or seconds people would sneer, and now that i am a health nut the sneer, so i say screw it, i'll be who i'll be

I do what I do, for me.

We all should....

I'm in the same situation, except I don't get support from family or friends. My parents always say they'll do something about gettingin shape, yet never do. They just don't seem to understand why I do what I do. All of my inspiration comes from you guys. Thanks.

I get support from my mom. She tries to get in shape, but lacks willpower, so she's got a lot of respect for anyone that can do it.

My girlfriend, on the other hand, is just wierd about all this. She complains, non-stop, about my workouts and that I don't have a belly anymore (chubby-chaser). (At the same time she thinks that she shouldn't have an ounce of bodyfat herself.) Then, whenever we're around friends or family, she makes me flex for them, or my favorite: "Feel his boob!!!!" And then, grins like I'm some new toy or something.

Some women are just skrewy!!!!

I'm just happy no one bugs me for help. IMO, there is nothing worse than taking the time to help someone just to have them quit in a week.

I don´t get support from my parents, just from a few friends. Actually, my parents think that I am insane because I eat more than 6 times a day and go to the gym 5 days a week. :)

My parents used to not only not support me, but yell at me and try to get me to stop... til they saw the direct link that working out and eating right had with my self esteem. Now my mom tells me to go work out and not eat junk food LOL

I get a hellavalot of support from both (not to mention my employer)
because I used to just sit around and smoke weed and cigs all day :D
Art.

Thanks

All awesome answers.

I do what I do for me, and F*** it if they don't understand. It's an obsession.
I am doing it to prove my brother wrong. I am doing it so I'll look good naked. I am doing it, and fu** it if they dont get it.

wasn't looking for sympathy there pps, just curious if anybody else thought the same thing. I mean, why wouldn't your family want you want to be strong & healthy & in the best shape ever?

Could it be because they are afraid I might acheive what they can't or won't??

this board is really awesome!

spottieottie,

No, I do not go to school here. I just work. and train.

hey man if you gotta be addicted to somethin, might as well make it something good for you

I made the "big leap" a little over a year ago. My husband gave me nothing but grief about the weight I was losing, and the fact that I was monitoring my diet so closely. He kept giving me the same story - "you look fine, you don't need to." BUT, he loves me to flex my biceps for his friends:flex:
Now, one year later, he is working his butt off to get in shape. If you can't join 'em - BEAT 'em!:bash:

Preacher,

Yes, that is a fine article. I see too many people just like that, and it pisses me off. Who are these people who won't live up there potential??? Fuck them!

Am I turning into a hard-ass yet?

I used to whine about why I couldn't, now I try to figure out how I can, or will, and plan. and then what will I eat??? god, I hate eating sometimes now. I am still the worst - THE WORST - dieter ever! I force myself to eat, and just shovel it down.

that is all I am doing now, until I can throw off the yoke of this damb-eternally unattained goal for myself.

Tomorrow is hams and quads. I can't wait. One day closer to chest & triceps again. hell, I might even skip the wait.
